本作は、『箱男』よりもずっと考えてしまうし、『砂の女』よりも複雑な舞台設定が繰り返されるし、『箱舟さくら丸』よりも言葉遣いが面白い。

なんたって、冒頭の文章からして格好良いんです。舞台役者が言ってみたい台詞の代表だと思います。声に出して読みたいのはこの小説です。物語はハード・ボイルドで、文体は安部さんの美学の連続で、登場人物はみなロシア人のような雰囲気があります。日本ではなくてロシアの街で朗読されでもしたら、絶対に行きたい作品です。存在の哲学とか、象徴しているものは何かとか、すべて抜きにして読みたいと思いませんか？

安部公房さんに会ってみたいなら、この『他人の顔』のページをめくってみてください。

作中には、三冊のノートと手紙が出てきます。井上靖さんの『猟銃』にも三冊の手紙が出てきましたが、本作品の場合はノートです。ノートには何がどんな経緯で書き込まれているのでしょうか。実際に読み進めていくと、自分自身も分裂していきそうな倒錯が起こります。

ときどき読み返しますが、緻密で詩的な表現にうれしくなってしまいます。いったい、この作家はどれだけ時間を費やして書いたものか、と思わずにはいられません。星５つです。

安部公房のモチーフを一言でいえば、「存在論」ということができると思う。なかでも「他人の顔」は、人間にとって必要不可欠な「顔」を題材とし、人間存在の不安を容赦なく揺さぶる作品である。また、安部公房はしばしば理系の作家といわれるが、本作品における精緻な科学的記載はまさに作者によってのみ可能であり、新鮮な読後感を与えている。そして、個人的感想であるが、作品の後半部でエピソード的に語られる少女の映画が印象的であり、作品全体のテーマを暗示しているように思われる。
