胃カメラ開発に関しては、ＮＨＫの人気番組『プロジェクトＸ』でも扱われていましたが、感動の押し付けという批判もある同番組が苦手という方に是非お勧めします。

開発者の私生活がフィクションになっている点を含め、吉村作品として昇華されている部分もあります。しかし一方で、同じ吉村作品の『戦艦武蔵』などに共通する、研究者達の地道な葛藤と努力、そして熱意が冷静な筆遣いでひしひしと伝わってくる良作として完成しています。

　胃カメラを完成させるまでの紆余曲折が克明に記されている。一つの物を新たに作り出そうとするときには、幾つかの困難があり、また、その困難に立ち向かうねばり強さが成功につながるのだというよい例であると思う。
　事実に基づいた小説であるが、主人公の私生活は著者の創作である。これは蛇足であると感じた。

胃カメラという言葉で知らない人はいないくらい、有名な医療機器の開発のドラマ。
現在は、内視鏡という名前で、様々な場面で活躍しています。
医療人として、誇りに思う作品のひとつです。
