この作品は既に30年近く前に書かれたものであり、当時はまだ関係者が生きておられて、それらの証言を著者が丹念に集め完成されたものである。この本でノンフィクションという分野が確立したもので、当時は記録文学と呼ばれた。そして様々な文学的挫折を乗り越えた著者が到達した出発点でもある。この本を読む方はその著者の意図を汲んで欲しい。是非同時に「戦艦武蔵ノート」も読んで欲しい。著者はこの作品を発表後、一部の読者から自分の意図が間違えてとらえられていると言っている。今ちまたの本屋に平積みされている安直な作品とは、全く違うものだということを感じて欲しい。吉村昭氏は誠実で実直、そして頑固であるが、極めて冷静な目を持った方である。間違っても安易な読み誤りはしないで欲しい。

この本を読む前に、まさに「武蔵・大和」と好対照的な実践型高速戦艦の生涯を描いた「戦艦　比叡」を読んでいたこともあって、この頃の「大艦巨砲主義」がいかに虚しいものであるかを充分承知した上で本書を読み始めた。

呉では、1号艦である「大和」が先に竣工されていたが、「武蔵」を建造するにあたってまず問題になったのがいかに秘密裏に行うかということであった。そこであらゆる試行錯誤の結果、棕櫚のすだれを四方にはりめぐらすことになった・・・。
更に問題なのは、進水の時であった。船台をすべっていって最後には対岸に激突してしまうのではないか・・・。

あらゆる問題に技術者が必死で解決してゆくさまがドキュメンタリータッチで描かれている。

何千人という人達の苦労で完成された「武蔵」の最期はあまりにも悲し過ぎる・・・。

吉村昭という作家は抑制の効いた文体だ。
事実を積み上げ、事実に語らせる。その手法が生きた端的な名作だと思う。シュロ縄が市場から消えるところからスタートして、最期のレイテ沖海戦まで。淡々とした筆致が語るものは逆に雄弁だ。戦争文学なんどという範疇ではなく、日本人の生き方を活写して措くところのない一作といっていい。
