　着付けを習い終えた後に読みましたが、着物に関する生きた知恵や作法、身の丈にあった自分らしい着こなしのあり方を着付け教室の先生以上に教わった気がします。着物に関することだけでなく、人との関わり合いの中で必要な心構えも見えてきます。装いを核として、人の生き方を問うてくる内容がすばらしい。些細なことだけれど、自分で脱ぎ散らかした長襦袢や肌襦袢などを見ると、これでは‘るつちゃん’に軽蔑されてしまうわ、などと思うこともありました。
　折につけ『きもの』で得た内容がよみがえるのは、帯の結びを鏡に映してみるように自分の姿を客観的に見ることと似ていて、興味深く感じられます。

　とても‘お祖母さん’のような達人になることはできないけれど、かつてそうした知恵を持っていた日本女性がいたことを誇りにも思えました。

少し前の中高年女性の洋服の色使いはセンスなしだと思っていたが、実は着物の感覚で柄や色を選んでいたのだと、後に知った。この本で着物へのこだわりを見るにつけ、あのダサダサの母のセンスが別の美意識からの発想だったのだと今更ながらに思う。また、結婚相手の決め方など、「何で？」と思うような決め方だが、これもなんだかいとおしく感じる。

着物の着心地にこだわる少女るつ子の半生。 祖母のアドバイスを頼りにきものの扱い方のみならず、それを着こなす人間について思いをめぐらせる。

幸田文の、無駄を省いた正確な文章は、大正期のノスタルジーというよりむしろ現代にも通じる命題を投げかけるものだ。るつ子のこれまでの生き方を覆すように起きる関東大震災、そして結婚。未完なのでこれで終わってしまうのが残念だが、すっきりとした読みごたえのある名作だと思う。
