すでに他のレビューでも述べられていることではあるが、本書は
一般的な意味での「グルメ本」ではない。通常、グルメ本といえば
檀一雄や開高健の様に華麗なレトリックを駆使して酒や美食の味を
描写したり、玉村豊男のように食文化それ自体を文明批評的な観点から
考察したりしているが、本書にはそのどちらも当てはまらない。ただ
ひたすら山口「個人」との関わりから各名店について述べているだけで
ある。それでは何の参考にもならないのでは？と思われる方もいるかも
しれないが、多くの批評家が指摘するように日本文化は文芸から日常
生活に至るまで「場」をひたすら重視するものなのであり（例えば、
万葉から新古今までの王朝和歌は「自立した芸術」ではなく、あく
までも「社交のための文芸」であった）、その意味では本書における
山口のスタンスも日本の文化的伝統に極めて忠実なものであると
さえいうことができるだろう。そして山口の飄々とした筆は、各店
それぞれの「場」の雰囲気をこれ以上考えられないほど忠実に
再現して我々読者に伝えてくれるのである。

章ごとのタイトルは「鉢巻岡田の鮟鱇鍋」のようにどこの何がおいしいのかがわかるようなタイトルがついています。しかし、実際に読んでみると味よりも、そのお店の雰囲気の良さや働いている人の人柄の良さに惚れて山口さんの「行きつけの店」というものは決まってくるようなのです。

どこのお店とも、（お店と客）としてではなく（人と人）の関係を築いている。自分もそんな付き合いをできるお店をたくさん作りたい！と思えるあったかい本でした。

食通でも知られた著者の、北海道から九州まで全国津々浦々の行きつけの店23件を紹介したエッセイです。ただ、著者のエッセイだけに、単なる名店の料理ガイドになってはいません。それどころか逆に、料理についてほとんど触れられていないお店もあります。なぜなら、著者にとって行きつけの店とは、「私にとって大事なのは、店の雰囲気や従業員の方である」からです。従って、その店の料理だけでなく、お内儀や板長、従業員たちの人となりを逸話を交えながら描いたヒューマンエッセイともいうべきものになっています。また、お店の雰囲気や従業員を捉えた写真が各店ごとに２枚ずつあるのも、お店を知る上で嬉しい限りです。

でも、どうしても味が気になる方には、著者の次の言葉を贈ります。「ここで、諸君に質問する。こういう店が不味いと思うかどうか。・・・そうだ。それでいい。きみの答えは正解だ。」
