この作品が発表されたのは１９５８年であるが、未だ読者の支持を受け増刷を重ねる清張の代表作である。
交通通信手段に汽車や電報が使われるあたりはさすがに時代を感じさせるが、アリバイを盾とする犯人の牙城を崩すという推理小説独特の展開を体系的に整え、大衆文学に社会派推理小説のジャンルを築いた清張の功績は、これを差し引いても余りあるのではないだろうか。
鋭い感性を持つ老練刑事と行動的に実地検証する若手刑事を配する対照的な人物造形も物語りに彩りを添える。
時代を超えて読み次がれる作品には、やはりそれなりの理由があると思う。

　今まで「堅苦しい」と勝手に誤解していたけど、すげー読みやすかった。本人の写真がコワモテだったし、「大文豪」だったので、何となく避けていたんだけど。すらすら読めるわー。文体が柔らかいし、話も分かりやすい。長さも適当。動機から追いかけないで、犯罪の可能性をおいかけていくストーリー展開は、ややもすれば「ヒトが描けていない」と拒絶する対象になってしまいがちだけど、追いかける刑事の心理描写がうまく補っていて、時代の緩やかな流れと相まって、心地よく読めました。はい。

　先入観から来る思いこみを巧みに利用したトリックと、凄くささいな事から捜査を展開して行く様が、妙にリアルで、いわゆる新本格とは一線を画していておもしろいっす。

　昭和３０年代ってのは、こーいう時代だったんだね。電報が電話を補う情報伝達手段として活躍し、東京-九州は特急で１７時間。五右衛門風呂。なんか、不思議だ。

優れた作品は時代が変わろうとも優れている！
この小説のすごいところは起承転結の起の部分ばかりを強調する最近の小説と違い、何気ない男女の無理心中の事件から始まり、汚職、人間関係、病気、女のプライド、刑事達の苦悩など、複雑な登場人物達の感情を中心に、人の先入観による盲点の恐ろしさなどを描いた心理描写がメインの作品である。

娯楽としてのミステリー作品とは一味違う！
