社運と壱岐自身の進退をかけて挑んだ石油発掘事業で、壮大なドラマが生まれてきます。
その個人の人生やいくつもの商社、国内外の政治を巻き込むスケールの大きさに、商社と縁がない私は、ただただ圧倒されるばかりです。

すべてが終わると壱岐は、自分の原点に戻っていきます。とても納得がいくラストです。
と思うと同時に、こんなに強い人、誠実な人って、いるのだろうか、どうしたらこんなふうになれるのだろう…と思いました。
人間の精神的な強さと描く、傑作です。

前半に比べれば後半の石油編はいささかパワーダウン、石油掘削という題材がはたして小説に向くものなのか、はたまた筆者が取り組むにふさわしいものなのかなど多くの読者が疑問を持ちつつ読了するとおもいます、「沈まぬ太陽」第３巻航空機事故編同様にエンジニアリング関連の話題を小説の中の消化するのは筆者の力を超えたものだと判断します、これがもし全盛期のＦ・フォーサイスならはるかに波乱万丈の掘削劇を面白く描写したでしょう、

などなどとは思いながらも、壱岐が向かう終末はどこなのか、そして石油と社内の派閥抗争(筆者の最も得意な話題)を絡めたクライマックスはもちろん娯楽小説の王道です、

終章に向かうにつれて感じたことが、筆者が実は主人公壱岐正にあまり愛着をもっていないような印象を受けたことでした、山崎作品の他の主人公に比べれば壱岐正に関する書き込み方では作者が主人公に注いだ愛情のようなものはしょうしょう薄めと感じるのは私だけではないでしょう、

父親としての壱岐と息子の親子関係の冷え冷えした様が一応の解決は見るものの冷え切ったままに終わる点にとくに壱岐への作者の愛情の薄さを感じるわけですが、おそらく息子の父へのさめた感情は壱岐正の人生を貫く妥協のない「出世主義」への反発であり、壱岐正が山崎作品中でもっとも正体不明の不可解な人物として描写せざるを得なかった「何か」を感じてしまいます、

なお、壱岐がシベリアから引き揚げたと書中で述べられる昭和３１年１２月２６日は歴史上の「最終引揚船到着日」です、壱岐のモデルとなった瀬島龍三が引き揚げたのはその前、昭和３１年８月１９日天気晴れ(自伝「幾山河」による)です、また、秋津中将のモデルとなった草場辰巳中将が服毒自殺したのは昭和２１年９月２０日です、

引き込まれる物語であっただけに、あまりにあっけない最後に絶句しました。残念です。色々なことが中途半端なまま物語が突然幕を閉じました。不完全燃焼の一言です。
