1巻600ページ超、全4巻の大作である。日航に勤める主人公を中心に日航の闇の部分を描く社会派小説「沈まぬ太陽」でも彼女の取材の緻密さが感じられたが、おそらく「不毛地帯」は「沈まぬ太陽」が世に出るにあたり、その試金石的な役割を果たした小説なのだろう、同様の取材の緻密さが感じられた。この小説では、シベリアに11年間抑留された元日本陸軍参謀の主人公が帰国後商社マンとして第2の人生を歩んでいく姿を描いており、前半はシベリアでの強制労働、後半は砂漠の中での石油開発と2つの不毛地帯を舞台にしている。様々な不幸、困難を経験しながらそれぞれの不毛地帯に不屈の精神で立ち向かっていく主人公に知らず知らずのうちに感情移入してしまい、大作の割にはどんどん読み進めてしまう。お薦めの1冊である。

シベリアでのつらい思い出に耐えつつ、壱岐は自分に与えられた職務を全力で行う。
それは、太陽の直下、アラビアでの石油発見であった。
どこを掘ればいいのか。掘れば掘るほど、会社の資金は底をつく。
いつ中止するのか。絶対にやり遂げたい、という部下の意思をどう汲み取るか。
会社人として、勝負の時が来ました。
恋の方も、発展します。

三巻では、日本企業による海外進出の始まり（高度成長）と外資自由化を迎えつつある時代を背景に商社マンの戦いを描いていますが、個人的には、重厚長大な作品にあってやや中ダレしている気も否めません。

大人になって久しい今となっては、政治的駆け引きや寝技に重点が置かれ過ぎている気もしますが、これを読んだ少年当時は「商社マン」に憧れたものでした。
