「金の輪」は、４ページ足らずのとても短い物語ですが、時を経ても一向に色あせない不思議な光に満ちています。
ありとあらゆる余分を排除し、エッセンスのみで描かれたようなひとりぼっちの少年の話は、童話としては衝撃的な内容です。
いつも新鮮な感動を覚えるのはそれゆえなのかもしれませんが、
同時に、未明独特の高潔が最も端的に表れた作品ともいえます。
この単純なプロットに、これほどの輝きが宿っていることは、驚異と言うほかはありません。

この童話集の中の「金の輪」という作品の中では珍しく
死というものを正面から扱った作品です。
私はこの作品を児童読物の最高峰のものとして、あまり
誰かに紹介したいと思ったことは今までありませんでした。
あまりに自分が好きで、この作品を批判されるのがいやだからです。
せっかく日本人に生まれたんだから、小川未明の童話読んで見ませんか

　電車での一人旅の道すがら、気が向いたときにのんびりと本を読みたいという理由から、本屋で何の気なしに手にとった本がこの文庫であった。パラパラとページをめくったときに「汽車」「レール」などの文字が多く目つき、短編の童話集であるからぶつ切りで読むにはちょうどいいだろうと、特に深く考えることも無く買い求め、ジーンズの後ろのポケットに入れた。
　私には、その旅行の印象が一つも残っていない。言うまでもない。この童話集に夢中になってしまい、旅行などどうでもよくなってしまったからだ。誤解を恐れずに言うなら、この童話集は現実よりもリアルだ。
　それぞれの作品の中では、動物が言葉を操ることもある。さらには、風やレールといった生命を持たないものまでが会話をする。そのことだけを見れば、荒唐無稽で現実感のない話に映るかもしれない。しかし、にも関わらずリアルな物語として成り立つのは、著者の眼差しの深さによる。
　著者は、全作三人称で物語を描き、その中に自身の感想は極力入れないようにして、淡々と時系列で物語を進めていく。ただただ、そこに在るものをそのまま言葉にしているといった趣である。私は、描かれた物語の脇に、その物語をじっと見続けている著者の眼差しを感じる。人を愛し、自然を愛した人の、穏やかな眼差しがそこに在る。著者の実感がすーっと私の心に流れ込んできて、とても暖かいもので満たされていく。
　この童話は、今、この場所から少し離れて気分転換をしたいが、そんな時間はないという大人にこそ読んでもらいたい作品である。
