　商売の神や、笑い顔の神、数百年も一枚の貨幣に宿っているという神など、さまざまな神が登場する。神であっても、必ずしも人間を助けてくれたりするとは限らない。助けようとしているけど、うまくいかないだけかも……

本書は1965年7月に新潮社より刊行されたものの文庫版です。

1000編を越すSF短編小説を残し、ショートショートの神様と呼ばれた星新一さんの作品40編を収録。

短編なので読みやすく、それでいてしっかりオチがついていて、時には自分の考えの及ばないような意外性のある結末に感心し、自分とは違った新鮮な考えに触れ、ものの見方や考え方が広がったような気がします。また、星さんの作品は後世多くの人々に読んでもらえるようにと、具体的な地名や人名といった固有名詞をなるべく登場させないことで、通俗性を出来る限りなくし、読みやすく分かりやすい文章で書かれてます。そのため老若男女を問わず大いに楽しむことができると思います。

星新一氏のショートショートの書き方の中で、
二つのアイデア、言葉を組み合わせていくというのが、
あるそうやけど、
禁じ手、封印、このジャンルはよっぽどせっぱ詰まったり、
めちゃくちゃおもしろい作品になると確信せんかぎり、
書き始めないというのが、あるらしい。

神様モノ、悪魔モノ、魔法のランプなど、
三つの願いシリーズ、タイムマシンモノなんかもはいるんか？

作者があえて、そういうジャンルとして認識しているほど、
ありきたりやパターンかしてまうほど、言葉を切りつめて
記号化するようなイメージすらうけてまうねんけど、
だからこそ、時代を超えて、普遍的なアイデアや概念が
伝わってくる作品として、何度も読み返せる本として
俺様は星新一のショートショートが大好き。


その中でもこの一冊は上位ランクイン。
