星 新一
1926‐1997。東京生れ。東京大学農学部卒。1957(昭和32)年、日本最初のSF同人誌「宇宙塵」の創刊に参画し、ショート・ショートという分野を開拓した。1001編を超す作品を生み出したSF作家の第一人者。SF以外にも父・星一や祖父・小金井良精とその時代を描いた伝記文学などを執筆している(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

苦境は大きければ大きいほど乗り越え甲斐があるということを教えてくれる本。星一のバイタリティーあふれる生き様を知って、挫折のない人生は逆にとてもつまらないものであろうとまで思えるようになった。金などなくても知恵と勇気と弛まぬ努力で成功への道をどんどん切り開いていくその様はまさに痛快の一言。こんなにすばらしい本が絶版とは理解に苦しむ。この本は、国語の教科書に採用され、また星一の写真はお札になってしかるべきである。

　「西国立志篇（自助論）」（Ｓ・スマイルズ）の精神を実践した星一の半生を描いた、このすばらしい書籍は現在も出版され続けています。まさに粉骨砕身の星一のすがすがしさは、私たちの心を温めてくれます。感動で涙が溢れます。

「どんな苦境に立たされてもあきらめることなく努力を続ければ、必ず夢はかなう。」
その典型的な例を見るような作品だ。どんな困難も、工夫と知恵と勇気と度胸で乗り
越えていく。読んでいてすがすがしさを感じる。明治時代・・・。今のように物が
豊かな時代ではなかったと思うが、未来に希望を抱くことのできるとてもいい時代
だったような気がする。「自分たちの手でこれからの日本を作り上げていく。」
人々の、そういう意気込みが感じられる。また、当時のアメリカ留学の描写も、
とても興味深かった。平和で穏やか、そしてのびのびとした自由さにあふれている。
「古きよき時代」そんな言葉がぴったりだ。
とても読みやすく、読後もさわやかさを感じる作品だった。
