星さんの本を読むと「あれ？私ってこんなに忘れっぽかったっけ？」と思う。
だって、もう何十回も読んでいるはずの話しなのに
いつも結末が思い出せなくて
どんでんがえしのどんでんがえしの、またまたどんでんがえしに
まるで初めて読んだときみたいに「どきっ！」「ええっ！？」と
必ずびっくりしてしまうのです。

そして私が「最高傑作」と信じて疑わないのが
この「おのぞみの結末」。
一冊手元に置くべし。
だってみなさん、これ一冊で一生楽しめますよ。

　小説現代の「ショート・ショートの広場」の初代編者だった著者。
　お手本のような短編集です。
　実は私が生まれるずっと前に出版された本なのですが、それでも結構新鮮に読める。これはそれぞれの短編が、アイデア、構成ともに洗練されているからでしょう。

　なんだか奇妙な状況設定がなされ、その中で矛盾・破綻が見つからないまま話が進み、ひねって、落とす。
　本当に、きれいです。

久しぶりに星新一のこの本を読んだ。 学生時代には、何冊も買い込んで、よく読んだ記憶が あります。

この本にはいくつかの短編が含まれていますが、どの 話も、何度読んでも、決して飽きることのない話に なっています。 　この話の主人公は銀行員で、ジャックポット教の信者 なのですが、ある日、現金輸送を任され、道中を共にする人たちが結局、殆どこのよくわからない宗教の信者で 皆で持ち逃げできてしまう。 　現実にはありえない話ですが、読む側が知らない間 に引き込まれるのは、主人公とその他の登場人物の会話 が妙に、管理社会の現実を映しているからかもしれません。星新一の得意な「管理社会」からの脱走・逸脱に こだわった逸品のお話です。
