著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

田山 花袋
1871‐1930。栃木県邑楽郡館林町(現・群馬県)に生れる。6歳で父を失い、貧困の中で育つ。1891(明治24)年に尾崎紅葉を訪ね、江見水蔭を知り、彼の指導で小説を書き始める。1907年、女弟子との関係を露骨に告白した『蒲団』が文壇に異常な衝撃を与え、自らの地歩を確実にするとともに、自然主義文学の方向性を決定した(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

「蒲団」は既に他書により読了済みであったことから、「重右衛門の最後」を本書で読んだ。私小説の流れの上にある「蒲団」とは異なり、自然（藤田重右衛門と少女）と社会（典型的因習村落としての塩山村）の相克をモチーフとするストーリー・テリングの才には、生硬な文体はさておき、（大袈裟に云えば）後の菊池寛や横溝正史の諸作につながるような煌きを感じた。また、いわゆる若衆宿の記載（168頁）も興味深く読んだ。

このストーリーは好きですよ。現在、恋愛はある型にはまったものではなくなっています。ましてや親の承諾が必要だとか、婚前交渉はタブーなどという考え方はとうの昔になくなってしまっています。現在の恋が乱れているとは思いませんが、何でも構わない（不倫や二股など）という風潮があるとも思います。そのような中、明治時代における厳しい父性制度（適当な表現かどうかわかりませんが…）において自由な恋愛ができない中で、主人公の弟子の女に対する恋心や煩悶、疑念、女の恋人への嫉妬などの心情を赤裸々にも表現されていると思います。話の内容は古いですが読んでみる価値はあると思います。最後のシーンはあまりに有名で滑稽ですね。昔と今の恋愛の違いというのを感じられるかもしれません。

中年の妻帯者である小説家が、若い女性を書生として世話しているうちに彼女に恋するようになるが、彼女には同年代の恋人がいて悶々とするという話です。それだけの話なのですが、妻帯者の浮気願望を「性欲」という言葉をはっきりと使って描く姿勢は、やはり当時（発表は明治40年）としては画期的だったのでしょう。明治後半にここまでの描写が許されるということに驚きました。

現代人の感覚からすると難しい漢字が多く使われていて読みにくいはずの小説なのですが、読んだ印象はあくまで叙情的なものであるところもすごいと思いました。主人公の中年小説家の心情はよくわかるとか公言できないところがつらいのですけどね。
