　私はこういった「文部省推薦」的な作品は進んで読もうとは思わない方なのだけれど、「何か時間つぶしの本を・・・」と何気なくこの本を手にとり、ほんの２~３ページ目を通した時にもうすっかり心奪われました。混ぜ物だらけのジュースやカクテルばかり飲んでいた口に、汲みたての岩清水をスーッと流し込んだような清涼感。美しい自然描写、戦争という荒んだ状況下でも人間らしい心根を失わぬ素朴な人々。もともと子供向けの童話を意図して書かれたとあってすんなりとしたさわやかな文章で書かれています。

　日本を遠く離れた南国の地で、誰にも顧みられることなく朽ち果てようとしている同胞の遺体の数々。それを捨て置くことのできない主人公の気持ちも痛いほどわかる。しかし、もし自分が同じ境遇にあってはたして同じ行動がとれるかどうか・・・。

　作者の竹山道雄さんは評論家、独文学者であり、小説は後にも先にもこの一作しか書いていないというのも驚きでした。戦後の混乱期、疲れ果てた人たちに希望を与える作品を、と筆をとったそうですが、それだけに柔らかな文章の中にも渾身の想いがこめられていると言えるでしょう。

　子供向けというより絶対に大人向けの作品。後半の水島の手紙が戦争の無意味さを伝えてくれる。
　個人的には、戦争がどうとか言うよりも、
「歌う部隊」
としての彼らの姿が好きだ。苦しい状況下で、大の大人が自作の楽器を用いて懸命に合唱する姿が美しいと思う。中盤で水島との再会シーンがあるが、水島が皆の「はにゅうの宿」に合わせて演奏を始める所は何度読み返しても泣けてくる。視点を変えて読んでみると非常にドラマティックな作品。

児童向けに書かれた作品だそうですが、オトナが読んでも得るものがたくさんあります。とても平易な文章で書かれているぶん、かえって純粋さが際立っているのかもしれません。主人公の心境の変化がせつなく、やるせなく心に残ります。

この本だけでも十分な価値がありますが、何度か映画化されているので、そちらも合わせてみるのもいいのではないかと思います。読み進むと同時に美しい映像や音楽が頭に浮かんできます。
