中島敦は、幼時よりの漢学の教養と広範な読書から得た独自な近代的憂愁を加味して、知識人の宿命、孤独を唱えた作家で、三十四歳で歿した。彼の不幸な作家生活は太平洋戦争のさなかに重なり、疑惑と恐怖に陥った自我は、古伝説や歴史に人間関係の諸相を物語化しつつ、異常な緊張感をもって芸術の高貴性を現出させた。本書は中国の古典に取材した表題作ほか『名人伝』『弟子』を収録。

著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

中島 敦
1909‐1942。東京に生れる。東京帝国大学国文科卒。横浜高女で教壇に立つ。宿痾の喘息と闘いながら習作を重ね、1934年、「虎狩」が雑誌の新人特集号の佳作に入る。’41年、南洋庁国語教科書編集書記としてパラオに赴任中「山月記」を収めた『古譚』を刊行、次いで「光と風と夢」が芥川賞候補となった。’42年、南洋庁を辞し、創作に専念しようとしたが、急逝。「弟子」「李陵」等の代表作の多くは死後に発表され、その格調高い芸術性が遅まきながら脚光を浴びた。享年33(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　読む前は中島敦には何となく敷居の高いイメージがあり手に取りづらかったのだが、実際に読んでみると食わず嫌いにならずに済んだことを感謝したいぐらいの気持ちにさせられた。古典的な叙情と価値観があふれる作品集は、胸に迫って感じさせられるものばかりで、ずっしりとした重みさえ感じられる。滅亡の美しさや、人によって異なるさまざまな義のありよう、師弟愛や、凡人を遙かに超越した偉人の伝記。漢文調の格式高い文章と相まってどれも非常に完成度の高い作品となっている。一つの事に没入していく人間の儚さ、愚かさ、美しさをここまで明らかな形で書き表した作家は少ないのでは？　とも思えた。
　すこし漢文の素養がいるかも知れないが、丁寧な注釈が入っているので別に読めないわけではない。ただ、やはりあらかじめあらすじを多少掴んでおくと分かりやすいかも知れない。それでも、是非とも多くの人に読んでもらいたい、文句なしの名作だと思う。

ストーリーは古典に拠る部分が多いので、文章について。
難解な漢字、熟語が頻発する文体は、
漢文の書き下しを想起させますが、
ガチガチの文語体ではないので、
普段から本を読む人なら、中学生でも読めるかもしれません。
辞書は必要となりますが、多くの難解な字は注釈で理解できます。
少なくとも、森鴎外の「舞姫」などよりは読みやすいので、
近代文学を読み始めるための第一歩にも相応しいかと思えます。
最近では、芥川賞受賞作の日本語も怪しくなりつつあり、
このような硬派一直線の日本語こそ、
後世にまで読み継がれてほしいと、個人的に願っています。
この本を紐解けば、失われつつある日本語に再会できるはずです。

自らの才能に絶対の自信を持ちながら、ふと他人の評価に怯え、また自身への猜疑感を抱く。挙げ句の果てに人生の道を踏み外して行く切なさを歌った短編「山月記」。夢に憧れる者、これから人生の船出を考える人々の胸を必ずやうつだろう名編である。
