夜更けに、街中の建物から屋根をはぎとり空からのぞきこめば、壁にかこまれた四角い空間に、独りぼっちで酒を飲んでいる人間が無数に見つかることだろう。 そんな自分の姿をまじまじとながめたいと思う人はいないだろうし、そんな境遇を楽しんでいる人もあまりいないように思う。しかし、この作品の主人公は、そんな夜を数えきれないほど重ねたすえ、ついに孤独の喜びを自覚するに至るのだ。その道程を描いたのが、『火宅の人』である。

かなり自分勝手な生き方に見えるが、一方では、ある種の素質がなければこんな生き方はできないとも思う。まず、生得の放浪癖がある。しかし、たまらなく人恋しい性格で、つねに自分の周りに子供や動物を散らしておきたい。一方で、人並みはずれて感じやすく傷つきやすい性質なので、老病死などの暗い現実に向き合うのは苦手である。現実に向きあうことを避けているうちに、いつの間にか独りぼっちになっている。主人公に同情することもできるが、これは小説。まずは自由自在を楽しむことにする。

無頼派作家檀一雄の代表作。哀しいまでに孤独な男(=作者自身)を描いた小説である。私小説の極地と言うより、事実をそのまま綴ったもの。

一見、家族を捨て、愛人と自由奔放な生活を送る粋人と見えて、実は何処にも行き場所がない寂寞感に溢れた男の姿が伝わって来る。それでいて、家族との絆が切れない不思議な関係も伝わって来て微妙な思いに捉われる。作者が唯一できる小説書きの仕事も、書くネタがなく、事実をありのままに書くしかない(=本作)という無能の人が、その無能ぶりを晒すしか他に生きるすべがないと言う自嘲と諦念。それでも、作者には何か未来に希望を見い出す生来の無意識な明るさが備わっているように感じられる。

作者が自己卑下の中、自分の居場所を見い出せないでいる男の寂寥感を綴った作品。

豪快すぎる男だ。旅情、風来、健康すぎる、体力がありすぎるそんな男の人生である。

給料が少ないとか、ちょっと風邪を引いたとか、あの人は、子供がたくさんいていいなとか、そんな些細なことは、人間の生滅に比べると、大したことない。人間の生滅も、人々の歴史に比べたら、短いものだ。ああそれが人生か。人の一生は、大宇宙の時間に比べると、一瞬である。それならば、いっそ、自由に、勝手気ままに、放埒に生きてみよう、そんな気にさせてくれる小説だ。

こういう生き方もカッコいいな。

安吾もいいがこの人もいい。もっと早くめぐり合っていれば、と思う作品。下巻はロンドン、パリから日本帰国後、九州など。あるがままに生きることへの熱い思いが伝わる。
