モンゴル高原の遊牧民の一部族の長の息子として生まれたテムジンは、数々の危険と苦難を兄弟たちと乗り越え、いつしか全モンゴルを統一し、ヨーロッパからインドにまで及ぶ遠征を企てる・・・。

テムジン、すなわちジンギスカンを世界征服に突き動かしたものは何だったのか？　その源をテムジンの、自分のなかのモンゴル人の血に対する疑念に求めつつ、リアルに描いていく井上氏の筆力に圧倒されます。後半国を築き上げてなお、征服欲を失わないジンギスカンの姿にも鬼気迫るものがありますが、やはり前半ほとんど裸同然から、兄弟たちと助けあって少しずつ地歩を固めていくところが物語としてもぐいぐい引き込んでいく力強さがあり、秀逸です。人間ジンギスカンの深部に迫る好著。

自分が蒼き狼の血（モンゴル）を引くことを証明しようとして征服者たらんとする主人公テムジン（チンギスカン）の生涯を描いた井上文学の秀作と言える。
読んでいて血が騒ぐ。

ただ、登場人物中キャラクターが立っているのは、主人公テムジンの他には、自分と同じ境遇に生まれ、同じように蒼き狼たれと願う長子ジュチ、正妻ボルチ、妾クランくらいで、他の武将たちや息子たちのキャラクターがつかみ難く、物覚えの悪い私などは人物相関図を描きながら読まなければならなかった。
こうしたサブキャラクターたちの個性も描いてほしかった。

自分が小説の主人公になりきることはあまりないのですが、このジンギスカンの生涯を読んでいくと、自分の人生が何重にもふくらむ気持ちが味わえます。王者として世界征服に走ることができた条件にはいろいろな要素があり、どういう要素がどのように作用して、あのように広大な帝国を作り上げることができたのかが、はっきりと理解できます。小説として面白いだけでなく、征服と服従の歴史を実体験に近い形で納得できます。
