２０世紀初頭に発見された膨大な量の経巻類。何百年もの時を生き延びた、それらの経巻類の背景をフィクションで描き上げた魅力溢れる作品。フィクションとはいっても、史実に忠実に絡ませて描かれており、年表等を睨んでいるよりも遥かに生き生きとこの時代について学ぶことができるのではないだろうか？巻末の注解だけでも、私のような無知な人間には十分な学びの機会だった。井上氏ならではの表情豊かな文体によって、あらゆる意味での中国という国のスケールの大きさを実感し、趙行徳と共に旅をしたかのような読後感を味わうことができた。

読み終えた今、実際にその場所へ旅に出たい思いに駆られている。
これこそが、この作品の魅力の証かも知れない。

現在の敦煌は既にコマーシャリズムと近代化がすすんでいるためかつての栄光と騒乱の時代を知るには書籍しか手がかりがない。本書はこのシルクロードのロマンをと歴史そして栄華衰退を飽きさせることなく読ませる素晴らしい小説。全てが美しい文章で綴られている。

　う~んこういう人生もあるんだなぁ、と唸りました。
そして、読み進むうちに自分がどでかい大陸の中で、作中の人物達と生きているような気分になりました。壮大な気分に。
　井上靖作品の中では日本を味わいたいとき「しろばんば」、中国を味わいたいときは「蒼き狼」かこの「敦煌」でしょう。
