　「人生にどうして死という馬鹿なものがあるのか」というのは、その場面に居合わせたヒトじゃないと実感の湧かない言葉だよなきっと、ボクも（幸いながらというか何というか）まだ心の奥底からこう思えた事は無いのだけど、この本で疑似体験させられましたです。はぁ。あぁぁ（泣）。

　中盤過ぎまで「愛」がぶわーっと展開されるんだよね。これがまた可愛らしくてねぇ、『永すぎた春』みたいな感じですよ、ただあれと違って本当に美しい、そう「美しい」という言葉がよくあうんだこの話が、って感じ（壊）。出会いから邂逅から進展していく様から何から何までが「美しい」んですよ。その美しさをですよ！あぁっ（壊）。解説で「○○は死なねばならぬ」なんて書いてるけど、悔しいけどそのまんまなんだよな、この作品は。読み終えて数時間たってるのに、感想文書いてるとなんか泣きそうになるもんな、やばいぜ涙腺。

　明治以降の日本文学って、積極的に読むべきものだな。最初に芥川とか漱石とか堅めの文学を読むとイメージが固まっちゃうもんな。敬遠するにはもったいないわ。おもしろいよ。おもしろい。

やや不安を感じさせる題名どおり、主題は、恋愛と死別です。ストーリーは、留学前の青年と、少し年下の女学生が婚約に至るという状況から始まります。女学生の描写が生き生きとしていて、とても印象的でした。少し、じゃじゃ馬なのです。その自由奔放さに、主人公は、少しずつ惹かれていきます。その心理は、『デイジー･ミラー』（ヘンリー･ジェームス）の主人公の男性と良く似ています。そして、婚約を済ませた後、主人公は、留学へと旅立ちます。この後の女性のいじらしい想いは、うらやましくなる程です。そして、二人に襲いかかる予期せぬ不幸。単純なストーリーですが、日本の近代小説には類を見ない、女性を主題とした、美しい悲劇です。

ずいぶん久しぶりに武者小路実篤の「愛と死」を読み返してみた。

高校生のときに初めて読んで号泣し家族に驚かれたのは懐かしい思い出だ。

何十年と経っているのにヒロインの夏子の魅力が色褪せていないことに驚く。

これほど生き生きとした愛らしい女性を、そのペンの力だけで具現化させてしまうのだから、作家の力とは驚くばかりだ。

今となってはもはや古風であるかもしれないが、夏子と主人公との会話はとても生き生きしていて微笑ましい。

とくに洋行中の主人公に宛てた夏子の手紙には人を温かな気持ちに誘う力がある。これが本作の最大の魅力かもしれない。

夏子の命を奪ったスペインかぜは、現実に起こったインフルエンザ大流行であって、１９１８年から翌年にかけて全世界で数千万の命を奪った（日本では死者３８万人）ということを知ると、夏子の悲劇はまったくのフィクションではなく、現実に起こったことなのかもしれないと思えてくる。
