泉鏡花は、下手な現代物よりも面白い。
そう思わされてしまった一冊。
別作（当本には未収禄）「湯島の境内」で有名な「別れろ切れろは、芸者のときにいう言葉…」のお蔦と主税の物語の、本作となるのがこれです。
「婦系図」というだけあり、沢山の、気質も容貌もまたその境遇もさまざまな女性が登場します。

「湯島…」でクローズアップされた二人の関係はあくまで本作の中では「ストーリーの一節」であるのにすぎず、それによって起きるもっと大きなうねりが、ラストへと一息に流れ込みます。
まさか、（いうなれば）ドンデン返しでアッと驚かされるなんて、泉鏡花作品では期待してはいなかった！（笑）
読み終えてじーん…と満足感を味わった久々の良作です。

堅苦しく考えず、娯楽として楽しめる良書だと思います。

　冒頭で描かれる出入りの魚屋との「べらんめえ調」のやりとりは落語か講談のような名調子で、その言葉の応酬のなかに、お蔦・主税夫婦の新婚家庭の幸福が輝いている。
　しかし、主税の先生の、弟子を思うあまりのお蔦に対する仕打ちや、先生の娘のあっけらかんとした天真爛漫さが二人をどんどん困難に追い込んでいく。夫婦がお互いに相手のことを思うが故に決断できなかったり、逆に辛い決断を選択してしまうという過酷さが二人の心身を痛めつけていく様子は読んでいて非常に悲しい。まるで昼の帯ドラマのようだ。
　だから最終章で発覚する事実は意外で、呆気にとられてしまった。言うならばサスペンス劇場というところか。
そこではそれぞれの人物が皆、清廉潔白なわけではないのだ、という作者の主張があるのだが、それはそれとして結末は涙を禁じ得ない。当時は封建的で親の意志に背いた結婚がうまくいくはずもなく、芸者だからこそできる自由恋愛もあっただろうに。そして結ばれた二人であったのに、それなのに、ああ、それなのに・・・、ということだ。ラジオもテレビも無い時代に新聞の連載はどれほどの涙を誘い話題になったことだろう。師匠である尾崎紅葉「金色夜叉」よりもこの作品の方が私は好きだ。
　なお、お蔦・主税の物語と言えば、「分かれろ切れろは芸者の時に言う言葉」という湯島の白梅のシーンがまず浮かぶが、それは舞台演劇での創作であった。この経緯は解説に詳しいが、このセリフと共に知名度が上がったと思っていたので驚きだった。

言わずと知れた「湯島の白梅」の原作。
主税「お蔦（つた）、別れてくれ」
お蔦「いいえ、別れろ切れろは芸者の時にいうことば。今なら、蔦には枯れろと、あたしには死ねとおっしゃってくださいな」

　満場の感涙を誘う名せりふは、しかし読めども読めども現れない。ページを繰っていくと、いつの間にやら東京市の下町から静岡に舞台は回り、土地の名家からそれぞれエスタブリッシュメントに嫁いだ美しい夫人たちを次つぎと誘惑する主税の姿・・・。

　無尽蔵とも思える語彙。和語、漢語はては英語ドイツ語などヨーロッパ言語までを駆使して織りなされる綺羅、星のごとき比喩。なかでも衣装の表現は文字通り絢爛豪華、上流階級の貴婦人がたのお召し物は言うに及ばず、場末の陋屋にひそむ貧民の垢じみた身なりまで、比喩だけはまるで大名装束の如し。

　旧かな正字ではなく、適当に現代語訳してあれば、原文の香りをさして損うことなく気楽に味わえる。

　いささかご都合主義的な筋立てだが、それを補って余りある収穫あり。
