私は以前、何度となく三島由紀夫の代表作に挑み、そして敗れた人間です。
しかし、本作は元々女性誌の連載用だったからか、魅力あふれる主人公麗子の深層心理を追い求めていくサスペンス的な内容であり、最後までスラスラと読めてしまいます。

三島の代表作とは、かなりテイストが異なりますが、その難解な文章構成に敗れた若輩者でも、彼の「天才」を味わえる著書だと思います。

さすが三島の美しい日本語には心が洗われる。
この作品は、麗子という不感症患者の治療を中心に綴られる。
この女性は、許婚者からDVを受けて逃げていたが、その許婚者が不治の病になった知らせを受けると、すぐに駆けつける。
許婚者の看病を献身的に行う彼女を、周囲は聖母のようだと称えるが、彼女はそのことについて懺悔する。
「あの人が死んで泣き崩れていた時、私は幸福を感じていた。私は本当に罪深い女だ」
と。これに対し、主人公の精神分析医は、
「世間の美談の何割か、慈善的行為の何割かには、性的な原因があると考えていいでしょうが、それだからと言って、それでその行為の値打ちが下るとは言えません」
という。
献血ルームで注射針を左腕に突き刺されながら私はこれを読んだ。
そして思った。
この慈善的行為に不埒な目的があろうと何ら値打ちが下ることはないのだと。

三島由紀夫の小説の面白さは、精神分析にあると思う。 それは「仮面の告白」や「金閣寺」などの代表作においても変わらない。複雑に束ねられた精神の糸を、一本一本ほぐしていく面白さ。 その上、「音楽」はミステリーの要素も含んでいて（私が今まで読んだ三島由紀夫の作品のなかでは）最も面白い小説の一つだと思う。
