学生時代（30年前）に読んだときは、「三島もこんな純愛小説を書くのか」という感想しかありませんでした。
しかし、今回一気に読んで最後の一節を読んだ時に三島由紀夫らしさを感じました。この小説を書いた目的は、最後の文章を書きたいがためのものと思います。
半世紀前に書いたとは思えない新鮮な気分と人間の一面を見せてくれます。

三島らしくない作品。「仮面の告白」のような、あまりにも病的、または深淵に臨むようなイメージの作品が多い中、同じ作者だとは思えない程美しい純愛が描かれています。

10代のころは、ただの純愛物語としか捉えていなかったのですが、歳を重ねて読むたびに彼の繊細な描写に敬服させられる気持ちになるとともに、失われた美しい日本の情景が胸にしみてくるようで切ないです。

親子の愛情、初恋、成長などが織り交ぜられた戦後の時代のお話。心が清められるような一冊です。読後がすがすがしい。

　文章がとてもきれいです。プロットも丁寧に運んでいきます。
　そして島の情景描写は美しいです。
　昔の島の恋愛への考え方については、我々にとって「窮屈だな」と感じるものですが、恋愛は成就していきます。
　三島だからといって、悲劇とは限りません
　三島のすんなり、安心して読める傑作です。
