井伏 鱒二
1898‐1993。広島県生れ。本名、満寿二。中学時代は画家を志したが、長兄のすすめで志望を文学に変え、1917(大正6)年早大予科に進む。’29(昭和4)年「山椒魚」等で文壇に登場。’38年「ジョン万次郎漂流記」で直木賞を、’50年「本日休診」他により読売文学賞を、’66年には「黒い雨」で野間文芸賞を受けるなど、受賞多数。’66年、文化勲章受章(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　最近は、井伏鱒二という名前を聞いても、「黒い雨」と「山椒魚」しか思い浮かばない世代が増えているらしい。かつては文壇の大御所だった人気作家も、時代が移り変わって忘れ去られていくわけか。淋しい話だ。

　昭和32年に単行本が刊行された「駅前旅館」は、井伏の作品のなかで「本日休診」「珍品堂主人」と並び称される、昭和の風俗小説の三大遺産と言えるだろう。こんなに飄々たる文士然とした小説家は、現代ではもう、とんと見かけなくなってしまったのではないか。

　いま読みかえすと、すこぶる渋い味わいの小説であることに気づかされる。老舗旅館の番頭さんの打ち明け話の、したたかな独白体のおもしろさ。特殊な業界をていねいに取材して書いていますね。下世話な人間観察の精妙と揺るぎなさ。屈折したユーモアの気品とほろ苦さ。まさに大人の読み物。

　このほど、文庫本の47刷にして改版をへて、活字が大きくなった。当初からの河上徹太郎の解説のほかに、池内紀の軽快なエッセイ風の解説があらたに加わった。作品の背景となる昭和の社会風俗をまったく知らない読者には、きっと理解の一助となるはずである。温故知新。出版社のこうした配慮には、日本文学への愛のぬくもりを感じた。
