すべての作品を通して、冷静で真摯な作者の心が垣間見られるような気がする。「河童」は素直に、童話のように読んでも面白いと思う。純粋なこころで、物語を書くと、このようなかわいらしい物語も、まるで透き通った水晶のような優しさにつつまれるものだと感じた。「歯車」は様々な日常の偶然を書き連ねた作品であるが、その沈着冷静な生を見る視点は穏やかな語り口の中に、あたかも切れ味の良いかみそりを抱えているようでもあった。怪しい美しさがある。

　今まで一体どれほどの人が、この後期芥川の狂気の世界観に影響されてきただろうか。おそらく、星の数ほど議論されてきた芥川の末期の思想の中で、一体どれほど正確にそれをつかんでいるものがあるだろう。おそらく多分ないだろう。それほどこれらの作品は常軌を逸している感を否めない。特に『歯車』ではドッペルゲンガーの影に悩まされているような描写があり印象的だ。

　また『河童』では精神障害が逆に正常に転化するような世界、『或る阿呆の一生』の狂人の子供という、遺伝に苛まれる芥川の姿、といった世界は少なからず我々が隠し持っているそれに共通していることにふと気付かされる。これらの作品はそういった我々の押し込められている何かを、表面に浮かび上がらせるような力が存在する。小説家の技量と言うより、人間としての芥川の魅力に触れられる一冊と言えよう。

　この短編集の「蜃気楼」こそが　僕が最も好む芥川の作品である。

　鵠沼での芥川の生活を描き出したエッセイであり　筋らしい筋は無い。但し　そこに使われる日本語の美しさは比類がない。

　芥川は　もともとはストーリーテリングの巧みな作家である。彼の王朝物を読む限り　あざといほどのストーリーを駆使しており　彼の知性のありかがいやというほど思い知らされる。
　そんな芥川が　晩年に　ストーリーを棄てたということなのかもしれない。
　
　本書に収められた「河童」は　日本で書かれたガリバー旅行記のような話だ。ここにおいて芥川は自分のストーリーテリングの最後の作品を書き上げたのだと思う。短編しか書けなかった芥川にしては　大長編である。

　そんな芥川が　最後にたどり着いた　筋の無い短編に　僕は　芥川の後姿が見えるような思いがする。芥川は　才気が有りすぎた。そんな才気が　芥川を葬っていく姿が見える。「蜃気楼」とは　暗示的な題名だ。芥川自身が　海上に浮かぶ蜃気楼になっていったということだと思う。
