『光抱く友よ』は、優等生の主人公と不良少女の交流、という、青春小説にありがちなテーマだが、そういう、偽善的なセンチメンタルを求めてこれを読むと、一本取られた気分にさせられるだろう。

むしろ、これは、担任の青年教師に淡い恋心を抱いたり、女友達と徒党を組んだりする、どこにでもいる平凡な自分に対して、疑問を持ち、決別するようになる過程を、丁寧に、するどく描ききった、甘さとは程遠い作品だ。

この本は<母が重くてたまらない―墓守娘の嘆き 信田 さよ子> のなかで引用されています。
「完成度が高い」ということで興味をひかれて読みましたが
文章の好き嫌いがはっきり分かれる作風だと思います。

いわゆる問題児と一見平凡な女子高校生の日常が静謐な格調高い文章で綴られていて
信田 さよ子 さんが文中で「重たい母」とそれから逃れられない娘の象徴的描写として絶賛された部分は
作品のラストでそれこそ光指すような光景として読む者のこころに迫ります。
が、ここまで読み進むにはかなりぎこちないものがあり
これは単純に好きな文体でないということが原因だとおもいます。

良薬を飲むおもいで読むのなら別ですが
文体に慣れないと少々しんどいので誰にでもお薦めとは言い難いです。

読み終えてすぐに続けてまた別の小説を読むと前作の印象からなかなか頭が切り変わら
ないことがある。今回は前の作品があまりに美文に満ちた幻のような儚い小説であった
ので本作を読み始めたときはいきなりがつんと浮遊状態から卑近な地面に引きづりおろ
されたような感じであった。
この味気ない文章で構成された物語は最初は取っつきにくく読み進めても高校生が主役
のよくある話かと思っていたが最後のシーンでその印象は見事に引っ繰り返った。その
時から遡及してそれまでのページがなんといききと輝き出したことか。光を抱く友がほ
んとうに見えたようであった。
この作家の文章は好きにはなれないけれど作者の術中に気持ちよくはまってしまったよ
うだ。
