　主人公「金井」のモデルは鴎外自身だ。
淡々とした文体で性描写がかかれている。黙々と事実に接近するように書かれている。
・・・吉原での童貞喪失シーンは、詳細に書かれているが、いやらしさはない。静かな内面吐露だ。
　
　「全ての芸術は性欲の発現である」
主人公は、その言葉が本当なら、自分は人間として失格なのではないかと自身の性生活を書き記して、性が人生にどれほどの影響を与えるのかを分析する。

　当時の政府には、歓迎されない内容だったらしく発禁処分になった作品だ。　現代では、むしろ淡白で問題ないだろうが・・・
時代は変わるということなのか。

明治に発表され、その過激さから発売禁止となった作品。
鴎外の性的自伝小説であるが、正直なところ、現代の感覚からだとまったく過激さからは遠いものとなっている。
しかしながら、この作品でも鴎外の筆致は確認できるし、何よりも面白い点を含んでいる。
それというのは、鴎外のありのままを鏡を見ているかのように見ることができるということだ。
「僕という人間はかようにして育ちました」
そう告白しているかのような小説。

幼い頃の体験から、異性との交遊、大学時代の硬派（男色家）と軟派（好色家）の話など、興味を持てることが多い。
ああ、鴎外という人間も、「人間」なのだなぁ、と共感しうる作品ではないだろうか。
また、彼の生きた時代というものを感じられるものであるとも思う。

そうして、彼の性的生活は、舞姫へとうつりゆくのだろう。

鴎外が、自伝的に、性に目覚めていく少年の成長を編年体で綴った小説。小さいころの女性に対する感情から始まって、同窓生とのやり取り、未亡人との関係にいたるまでを、淡々と描いていきます。

発表当初は発禁になったそうですが、冒頭に書いてある通り、自分の成長過程に興味を持った鴎外が、肩の力を抜いて、あるがままに若い男の心理を小説にした、というのが正解かと思います。そうは言っても心理描写は奥深く、誰でも一度は感じたことのあるような感情が、美しい日本語で書かれています。

素晴らしい小説ですが、鴎外のものには他にもっと良いものが何冊もあるので、そちらを先に読むほうが良いかも知れません。
