私は、高校以来、この本を幾度となく読んでいる。解説に、哲学者、評論家は、どのような主体からものを書くにいたっているか、自らの物事を捉える視点を明らかにしない場合が多いが、三木清は、この本発表以前の高飛車なところから降りてきて、筆が滑らかに動くようになつたというようなことが書いてあつた。

また、この本は、肌の温かみが感じられ、三木清という人間への入口であると同時に、結論であるとさえいいうるといつていたのも印象に残っている。２３程の章からなり、私は、そのなかのいくつもの文章が心に残っている。
失敗という人生はない　―真実についての528の断章 曽野 綾子 (著) という本も印象に残る短かい文の中に深い意味のこめられた本だと思いますが、それと同等以上に何度でも読めます。
テーマごとに、たとえば、幸福について、怒〃、人間の条件〃、健康〃 希望〃というような項目別に、歴史的、世界的見解をちりばめた上で、---多くは私も、その深さは分からないけど、真実だと想いますが、---自己の見解を展開されています。

「生と同じく幸福が想像であることは、個性が幸福であることを意味している。」
「いかなる対象も私をして孤独をこえさせることはできぬ。孤独において私は対照の世界を全体として越えているのである。}

「何が自分の為になり、何が自分の害になるか、の自分自身の観察が、健康を保つ最上の物理学であるということは、物理学の規則を超えた知恵がある。---私はここにこのベーコンの言葉を記すのを禁ずることができない。」

数えれば、きりがないほど何ヶ所も、書きたくなる文章がちりばめられています。現代人が、たまに自己を省み、自己のあり方を考えるには貴重な、凝縮された文章だと想われます。

富よりも、地位よりも、元気でいられること、機嫌のよいこと、真の幸福は、脱ぎ去ることも捨て去ることもできない。幸福は最大の力であること。私は、幸福について、という章が自己にとっても現代にとてももつとも要求されていることなのではと感じます。
「幸福は人格である。」「幸福を武器として闘う者のみが斃れてもなお幸福である。」

昭和２９年発行のノートという本ですが、現代の混沌とした状況、危機にも言及しています。
「形成は虚無からの形成、科学を超えた芸術的とも言うべき形成でなければならぬ。一種芸術的な世界観、しかも観照的でなくて形成的な世界観が支配的になるまでは、現代には救済がないといえるかも知れない。」のような形成的世界観、世界が、地球が、本当の意味でひとつになれる方向に向かおうとしている運動が、世界にはいくつもあると想います。日本にも、ひとつになりうる精神的世界観、価値革命が、この２０００年を過ぎた今、起きているかもしれません。

　この本は様々な話題について書いているがそれらは次の１つの問いに集約できるように思う。
　「私が生きているこの世界は実在だろうか」
この本はこの問いに答えるために三木が思索した記録ではないだろうか。

高校生のころ、通学途中の電車のなかで、夢中になって読んだ本。
人間性に対する鋭い分析と、澄んだ山川の水を思わせる文章。
あれから20年以上経った今でも、しばしば僕は彼の言葉を思い出し、自分に言い聞かせている。

「感傷はたいていの場合マンネリズムに陥っている」

彼の言葉は、清いだけでなく、強い。
