作家としての漱石の、『虞美人草』に続く新聞連載第二作目。漱石に自分の体験を小説にしてほしい、と申し入れてきた青年荒井某の話を元にしている。

訳あって家を飛び出した１９歳の主人公は、ポン引きの長蔵に坑夫にならないかと声を掛けられ、二つ返事で承諾してしまう。途中で赤毛布、小僧もメンバーに加わり、銅山まで旅する。辿り着いた先の飯場で坑夫たちに嘲弄されながらも、翌日主人公は炭坑の奥深くへと降りていく……。

主人公の意識の流れがさまざまな要因によって、右へ左へと１８０度変わってしまう様子を、物語の当時から時間も経って成長した主人公の視点から分析していきます。極限状況の下で、いかに深層心理が浮かび上がってくるかを省察した好著です。

べらぼうにおもしろい。
理屈はさておき、とにかく自由である。
「近代的自我？　知るか、んなもの、こっちとらぁ江戸っ子でぃ」と言わんばかりの、まさに宵越しの金は持ちそうにない語り口が、最初から最後までつづいていく。それがなんとも心地よい。
個人的な話だけど、実は漱石を「努力せずに」読み通せたのはこれが初めてである。まったく見方が変わってしまったといってもいい。こんなのばかり書いていたら漱石さんも神経症やら胃潰瘍やらにならずにすんだのに・・・とさえ思える。（こんなのばかり書いているわけにはいかなかったのだろうけど）

いわゆる「推薦図書！！」になるような漱石の作品がどうしても苦手、という人にはぜひ一読を。

　漱石の作品中、もっとも地味な作品である。

　気弱で優柔不断な主人公が、逃避行する中、周旋屋に出会うことから話が始まる。都会に出てきた三四郎がカルチャーショックを受けるがごとく、鉱山社会に右往左往する。

　結末、虚弱とキャリアが幸いし、自らの新しい活路が開けた。さらに、鉱山社会おけるすべてを清算して、娑婆に帰れることになった。芸が身を助けたのである。

　「坑夫」、漱石は脆弱な高等遊民を戒める三部作の準備として記したのでしょう。
