　大病を患い外出もままならない漱石が、
自宅の「硝子戸」の「中」から垣間見る世間と自分との関りについて
自由に思索を巡らせた随筆集です。
　私が特に好きなのは、漱石の子供たちが可愛がっていた飼犬の話。
仔犬の頃は周囲の人気者だったものが、年をとって病気になり、やがて皆に忘れ去られるようにして死んでしまう。
移ろいやすい世間の心情とは別に、漱石は最初から最後まで静かな愛情でもって犬に接し続けます。
かといって、年老いた犬に態度を変える世間を責めるような、教訓めいたところはありません。
自分の病体と老いた犬の姿を重ね合わせたりもするのですが、そこに大げさな悲哀は感じられません。
　どこまでも淡々と静かに犬の一生を書き綴っているだけなのですが、
漱石の美しい簡潔な文章を通して、人の世に対する慈愛みたいなものがじわじわと伝わってくるのです。
読み終えた後、苦しみや悲しみも含めて人生を肯定したくなる穏やかな気持ちに自分が包まれていることに気づきます。
慌しい日常からちょっと距離をおいて、ゆっくりとした時間の中で読みたい本です。

朝日新聞に連載したエッセイ。
本書の出だしで、なにか言い訳がましく、読者に配慮しています。それほどに他人の目を気にする作者が物語りという虚構を使わず、ただ率直に思ったことを書き連ねているところに尊敬の念が生じました。
作品には番号が振ってあって、好きな作品は、９，１９，３３です。

とくに９は、本書のいたるところで人の死、自身の死の話が出るなか、なんの特徴もないごくごく日常に見られるありふれた出来事を描いているだけなんですが、このひとつの作品だけで気持ちが救われます。私の心が和んだという意味で。そして夏目さんが、作品の中の気持ちに素直になれてそれを作品として残せたという意味で。できることなら、もう少しこんな気持ちになって欲しかった。
