一作ごとに＜進化＞をつづける漱石作品は、その全作品が問題にされる、という点で特別な作家です。以下、怠慢のそしりを受けるかもしれませんが、「彼岸過迄」の中でも特に評価の高い「須永の話」から、大変有名な文章を引用させていただくことにします。アフォリズムとして読んでも充分面白いと思いますが、これがどのようなストーリーの、どんな文脈の中に記されているか、是非ご自分で確認してみてください。僕は自分と千代子を比較する毎に、必ず恐れない女と恐れる男という言葉を繰り返したくなる。(略）僕に言わせると、恐れないのが詩人の特色で、恐れるのが哲人の運命である。僕の思い切った事の出来ずに愚図々々しているのは、何より先に結果を考えて取越苦労をするからである。千代子が風の如く自由に振舞うのは、先の見えない程強い感情が一度に胸に湧き出るからである。彼女は僕の知っている人間のうちで、最も恐れない一人である。だから恐れる僕を軽蔑するのである。漱石を読んでいる方にはお馴染みと思いますが、この男女観は漱石の全作品の根底に流れています。

高等遊民として食うにあくせくせずに悠長に暮らしているように見えて、須永の自意識を持って、毎日、自己と対峙し、人生を生きるとすれば、漱石が神経衰弱に悩まされるほどになったことも想像に難くない。自意識が邪魔をして欲しいものも手に入れられず、親族の婉曲な断りを感じ、将来、千代子を失望させることにまで考えを回し、手を引く決意をするが、千代子には卑怯者と罵られる。他人の眼に映る自分を常に理解しつつも、単純に快活に振舞うことはできず、嫉妬に悩まされるきつさ。そして肉親の縁も消えてしまい感じる孤独。憂鬱以上の辛いものがある。それを、あたかも、親戚の居間に上がりこんだような近しさで、目の前で見ているようなドラマを感じることになる。

最後になって、そういえば敬太郎から始まった物語であったことを思い出させられるが、物事の周囲をぐるぐる回っているだけでは自分の物語を生きることはできないが、自分の人生を生きる重さも余韻として残る。

　複数視点で語られる本作は、衝撃的な出来事で読者に強い印象を残すものではないが、漱石の文章の上手さによって繰り返し味わえる作品になっている。内容的には、大患後の方向を示すような、大いなるプロローグであると言えるだろう。
　私が繰り返し読んで改めて感じたのは、当時の女性の言葉遣いが美しいということだ。もちろん、このようにしゃべっていたのは中流以上の階級だろうが、現代の女性たちとはとても比較できない。以下に、例として259ページの千代子の言葉を挙げる。

「だから他の云う事を聞いて、もっと居らっしゃれば好いのに」
「そうするとまるで看護婦みた様ね。好いわ看護婦でも、附いて来て上るわ。何故そう云わなかったの」
「妾こそ断られそうだったわ、ねえ叔母さん。偶に招待に応じて来て置きながら、厭にむずかしい顔ばかりしているんですもの。本当に貴方は少し病気よ」
