著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

夏目 漱石
1867(慶応3)年、江戸牛込馬場下(現在の新宿区喜久井町)に生れる。帝国大学英文科卒。松山中学、五高等で英語を教え、英国に留学した。留学中は極度の神経症に悩まされたという。帰国後、一高、東大で教鞭をとる。1905(明治38)年、「吾輩は猫である」を発表し大評判となる。翌年には「坊っちゃん」「草枕」など次々と話題作を発表。’07年、東大を辞し、新聞社に入社して創作に専念。『三四郎』『それから』『行人』『こころ』等、日本文学史に輝く数々の傑作を著した。最後の大作『明暗』執筆中に胃潰瘍が悪化し永眠。享年50(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

「山路（やまみち）を登りながら、こう考えた。
　知に働けば角が立つ。
　情に棹（さお）させば流される。
　意地を通せば窮屈だ。
　とかくに人の世は住みにくい。…」

有名な冒頭から始まる漱石の代表作の一つ。明治39年作。
旅の青年画家の目を通して、漱石の美意識が漢文調の詩的な文体でつづられている。

現代口語で育った自分にとって、この小説は難解なフレーズが多くて、辞書なしで読み進むことが出来なかった。だけど、そんな面倒臭さをおぎなって余りあるくらい、ほんとに綺麗な文章でちりばめられた、珠玉の作品だったと思う。

漱石の透徹した審美眼によって描き出される「非人情」の世界。逗留地の自然、人々の描写が、西洋的な感覚とはおよそかけ離れた、幽玄的で禅的で俳句的でなんというか「東洋的」「日本人的」な意味合いでの美しさを感じさせる。洗練されてて、野暮ったさが微塵もない。こんな文章書ける人間がいる、そのことにまず感心した。

漱石の『こころ』を読んだ時の「先生」の心理描写の巧さもすごいとおもったけど、この作品での絶妙の音律、言葉の微妙な使いまわし、芸術観の鋭さにも、感嘆してしまう。個々の作品の質の高さはいうまでもないが、夏目漱石の偉大さは、一作一作を全く違った文体、手法で書くことができるとこにあるとよく言われるけど、なるほどそうかもしれない。

ほんと、彼は日本の至宝ですね。

この作品はかなり有名だが、夏目小説への入門書としては、あまり適当でないかもしれない。なぜなら、この小説は読みにくい。文体や言葉が古くて難解で読みにくいし、ストーリーもとてもわかりづらいのだ。

『草枕』は、漱石のデビューから２作目の作品だが、なかなか挑戦的な内容になっている。彼は当時文壇の主流であったリアリズム文学の、まったく対極に位置する文学をここに提示したのだ。いわゆる「非人情」の小説。主人公の行動の意味を考え、彼の気持ちに同情して一喜一憂する必要のない小説である。

最初に「ストーリーがわかりづらい」と書いたが、実はこの作品には、あらすじらしいあらすじがないのだ。主人公の画家は、山間の温泉場にやって来る。部屋から外を眺め、風呂に体を浸し、気が向けば画の構想をねる。俳句をよむ。土地の人たちとおしゃべりする。これだけである。ストーリーを追ったりせず、「非人情」の境地でページをめくる。それが、この趣味性の高い小説を楽しむ秘訣である。
