熊本から大学に行くために上京してきた三四郎の淡い恋の物語。三四郎の恋の相手、美禰子を初めとして、魅力ある登場人物が沢山出てきます。

美禰子がつぶやく"Stray Sheep"という言葉がモチーフとなり、東京で新生活を始めたものの、自分の居場所が確立できない三四郎の心の不安定感が、流麗な文体で描かれていきます。過去への訣別と未来への不安が渦を捲き、現在の自分が不確かなものになってしまう。そんな誰もが一度は経験する青春のもがきと、三四郎も付き合っていきます。

大学入学、就職などによって、身の回りの環境が変わると、自分はこの新しい集団に属していないのではないか、と孤独に感じることがありますが、そんな気持ちになっている人は、ぜひ読んで見るべき一冊です。

　三四郎は、東京の大学に入学し、律儀に講義を聞いていたが、どうも物足りない。そこへ、友人から、「下宿屋のまずい飯を一日に十返食ったから物足りるようになるか考えて見ろ」と、どやしつけられ、都内を散策してまわるようになる。そんなおりに出会ったのが、美禰子である。
　二人が三四郎池で出会う場面、病院で再会する場面、知り合いの引越しを手伝って仲良くなる場面、団子坂の菊人形を見にいき、人ごみの中から逃げ出す場面、等、有名な美しい場面が多い。文章によって、絵画的世界を構築する漱石の文章力に触れるだけでも、読む価値がある。

Japanese is difficult to understand. Different person has different understanding, particularly for stories.
I recently changed my opinion about this book. (Particularly, about Mineko.) I came across the questions.
“われは我がとがを知る。わが罪は常にわが前にあり”
Did Mineko simply say this for sorry to Sanshiro?
Who is stray sheep? Sanshiro? Or Mineko?
Sheep is always single. If I think that Soseki used “sheep” on purpose to make it deeper, do I think too much?
I know that “われは我が…” and "stray sheep" are from the Bible.

Mineko certainly hurt Sanshiro and felt sorry to him, but also she hurt herself.
Stray sheep is both Sanshiro and Mineko. “とが” is both Sanshiro’s and Mineko’s.
I thought that Mineko is proud and kind of bad woman, before.
However, I changed my mind. Most people take Sanshiro’s side, but I would like to take Mineko’s side as well as Snashiro's.
