~この作品は、小説と言うよりはむしろ、作者が「猫」の口を借りていいたいことを綴ったエッセイに近いものだと言うことができるでしょう。適当にぱっと開いて、でてきた所を読む、そういう読み方が楽しめるのもこの作品の魅力です。何度読んでも飽きません。登場人物たちの名前はだじゃれになっていて、作中いろんなギャグが飛び交います。「ずうずうしいぜ、~~おい」と言えば、「Do you see the boy」と返す酩酊ならぬ迷亭が、私のお気に入りです。~

　なにげない日常生活の会話や出来事の中から漱石らしい深い洞察と分析によって人間の利己や他愛のなさがくっきりと浮き彫りにされています。猫を主人公とした一人称の視点で書かれているのも面白い。人間の態度や発言に常にクールでシニカルな視点からその滑稽さをあばくさまは、さながら名探偵の謎解きのよう。必ずといってもいいほど笑いにつなげるその姿勢は一見気楽で楽観的なようにも見えるかもしれないが、その背後には絶望的な悲観と厭世観がのぞかれるような気がします。

漱石のなかで最も好きなのが、「吾輩は猫である」。
文体は落語調と言えば良いだろうか。
洒落た表現も出来るし、微細に書ける文体でもある。

この文体があればこそ、使える単語も多く、
ユーモアも皮肉も非常に気持ち良く繰り出されている。

どこから読んでも気持ちが良い。
登場人物の会話も好きだが、地の文がやはり面白い。
手元に一冊置いておけば、何気なく読み出せる。
５００ページ、６００ページと言わず、
５０００ページあっても、親しめるに違いない素晴らしい本。

福田恒存氏が指摘している通り、
漱石と鴎外は「近代」を真剣、深刻に考えていた。
漱石は神経衰弱になっていくが、「猫」においては、
深刻と洒落とユーモアが、渾然一体となっており、
悲しいくらい美しい。
