太宰？
なんか、背表紙黒いしわけわかんなそう。
そう思っている人、実は多いと思います。
作家のイメージが先行して、
「私は自殺するような男は嫌い」
「太宰ってなんか敷居が高そう」
こういう人、もっと多いでしょう。

太宰の底力を知らずして食わず嫌いしてはいけません。
太宰なりにリミックスしたハムレット。
シェイクスピアのに比べて

シンプルにして深遠に仕上っています。
ハムレットだけではなく、
キャラクターの全員が抱え持つ内面の闇が
一層濃くなっています。

最近自分の中の闇の存在が
気になってしょうがない人。
太宰の闇はあなたを待っています。

学校以外で太宰作品に接したのはこの本が始めてなんですが、かなりイメージとは違った作品でした。
太宰治というと、薄学な僕には自殺した作家で薄暗いイメージしかなかったのですが、少なくともこの一冊にはそうした薄暗い印象は受けませんでした。

「新ハムレット」は現代風に、戯曲の形を採りつつ原作よりも軽いタッチで描かれており、非常に読みやすいです。

僕が一番気に入った作品は「乞食学生」です。
その場凌ぎで中途半端な作品を出し続け、何とか作家をしている人生に疲れている主人公が、一人の青年と出会い、内に秘められた青年時代のまっすぐな情熱を確認する・・・
どの時代のどの大人にもこういう感情はどこかしらあるんだろうな・・・と感じさせられる作品でした。

太宰治の天才的な筆術を体感するなら、この一冊。好き嫌いが分かれてしまう内容かもしれないが、太宰が好きなら大丈夫な筈。内容よりも、太宰の魅力がひしひしと伝わってくる作品。一見の価値あり。
