　太宰治を読むとき、こういう人が生まれたのはどういう背景なんだろうとつい考えてしまう。
小説の題材もわりと私生活から取ってるような部分も見受けられるし。

そんなとき、この作品が参考になる。
割と素直な写実的な調子で紀行文風に書かれた里帰りの書のようだ。

小説家、太宰を産んだ津軽とはどんな場所なのか？

そういった私の好奇心を満たし、津軽への旅情を誘ってくれた作品でした。
自分的には太宰治の作品の中では一番好きな部類の作品です。

太宰は津軽の素封家の出であり、それが誇りでもあったが、兄達に頭が上がらぬことでコンプレックスにもなっていた。太宰と言うと、何か暗い屈折したイメージがあるが、それは出身に起因するところが多いと思う。そんな太宰が気ままに津軽を旅した時の紀行文が本書である。中には、戦時下の軍の秘密主義を皮肉った箇所があったり、とにかく明るく楽しい。これが太宰の本来の姿だと思う。そして本作のクライマックスは、太宰が母とも慕う乳母「たけ」との再会の場面である。「世界の中心で愛を叫ば」なくても、深い情愛は読者に伝わる。この場面では思わずじ〜んと来てしまった。太宰の最も美しい仕事だと思う。

　他のレビューにもある様に、太宰治にとっての故郷「津軽」、西海岸での「たけ」との出会いが今作品のメインだと思います。
これらの内容は、最後に書かれている「解説」を読めば、十分に理解できますので、太宰治を全く知らない人でも問題ありません。
　
　でも、私が注目したのは、この紀行文の独特さ！！
地理上の内容、名所の感想なんかすっとばして、ひたすらに旧友とのどんちゃん騒ぎばかりが続く！！
　僕は、風景の描写がだらだらと続く本が苦手なのですが、太宰にそういった風景描写は、紀行文なのに全く見当たらない（笑）
本州の北の最果てまで行って、そこの感想が「鶏小屋」。

　名所の風景を見て、檻の中の野獣みたいで人間の匂いがすると言い、自然に触れて、ただおそろしいと言う。
こんな、素直な感想の中に、太宰の色が溢れていて、そして実際に旅行に行ったときは、やっぱり絶景なんかよりも旅先の人と過ごした日々
が中心にあり、でも、そんな関係の中でふっと「津軽」が見えてくる。
そういうものだと思いました。
　
　ゆえに、紀行ものや旅行が好きな人にも、お勧めです。こんな記録の仕方もあったんだって、格好つけてた自分に気づかされると思います。
