あまり大げさな形容はしたく無いが、どう考えても
日本文学の至宝なのに、谷崎作品の中でも知名度が
決して高くないのは残念。

今昔物語、宇治拾遺物語を始めとした多数の古典を
引用、再構成し、さながら平安絵巻のような一本の
中編に仕上げたのは、さすがに文章の神様。

改行や句読点の少ない連綿とした文章だが、樗牛の

ような才気ばしった嫌味がない。言葉のすみずみに
まで細心の配慮が行き届いた、それでいて自由闊達
な最上級の日本語を堪能できる。

構成や学識もさすがだが、僕が谷崎にひかれるのは、
何と言っても、溜息が出るような文章の美しさである。

「美しい日本語とは何か？」と尋ねられたら、僕は
「それは少将滋幹の中にある」と答えるだろう。

平安期に舞台を置き、谷崎のテーマである母への追慕を描いた作品であり、六十代で書いたともあって谷崎円熟の作といえる。幼い頃他人に奪われ、なお思い続けた老いたる母に四十年ぶりに再会し、涙する滋幹。そして他人の排泄物に魅了される男を描いた価値観の転倒ともいえる描写から漂う美しさ。それらはまさに谷崎の生涯のテーマ、女＝母への思い、古典的作風、そして異常性愛（これは表面的なものであり、その奥に深い人間考察などが潜んでいるがために傑作になり得たのであるが）この３つの要素がふんだんに取り込まれ、生かされた秀作である。

寸毫も文章の調子を変えているわけではないのに
女の部屋に一歩踏み込んだ瞬間、雰囲気・場面を、
全く不自然さなしに変化させる、谷崎の腕。ため息が出てしまう。

例えば、「その一」後半、平中が侍従の部屋に忍び込む場面では、
遣戸の手をかけるところから、女の部屋の暗闇を予感させ、
空薫の香で読み手を一気にその暗闇の中へ、ぐいっと引き込んでしまう。

他にも感嘆させられてしまった場面がいくつもある。
特に、「その二」の冒頭から、上皇より仰せがあり、平中が歌とともに菊を奉る、
その流れをさらっと筆した（文庫で）1ページほどの運びは見事と言うの他ない。
また「その五」の國經が目覚めてから、讃岐との会話の終わるまでのところ、
実に、孕むものの多い、密度の高い文章だと思う。

小道具の配置、会話文の妙から、古歌・古文・逸話の挿入の仕方・タイミング、
谷崎の力量・感性がはじめからしまいまで冴え渡っている。

この作品を愛好せずにいられない人は、谷崎の王朝もの（「兄弟」「二人の稚児」など）
殊に谷崎訳の「源氏物語」も手にとって見てほしい、源氏にはきっと圧倒されると思う。
