初期の短編集。

谷崎ワールドを堪能するには、20、30ページの短編ではちょっと短すぎるのだけど、「刺青」「秘密」「少年」の三作は傑作。淫テリで小説が好きな人なら好きになるはずです。

どれも、倒錯した性愛（サディズムとかフェチズムとか窃視とか）がモチーフになっているようなんだけど、なんだかこれは性の話なのか何の話なのか、読んでいるうちによく分からなくなってくる。登場人物の何人かは、憑かれたように何かに偏執している。足とか背中とか、目隠しプレイとか。まっとうな基準で言ったら、パラノイアになるのだろうけど、読んでいるとなんだか彼らがまともに見えてくる。これほどまでに何かに固執できるっていうのは、変態的でもあるけれども、全ての物事に飽いている現代人にとっては羨ましいことでもあるのだ。

多分、こういう世界に暴力を加えると花村萬月になる。本作品集の谷崎の世界は濃密でときに淫靡であるが、暴力がほとんど登場しない分、不思議な静謐さをたたえ、なぜか品がある。

処女作で、刺青師の妖しい脅迫観念を描いた「刺青」、金持ちだが気弱な同級生の少年とその姉との交流を深めていくうちに性的倒錯の世界に入っていく「少年」、弄ばれることに自身の存在意義を見出す道化ものを描いた「幇間」、住んでいる場所を明かさない昔の女と逢引を重ねる「秘密」、谷崎の自伝的小説「異端者の悲しみ」など、初期短篇7篇を収録。

人にはちょっと言えない倒錯的趣味を愉しむことと倫理的なブレーキとの葛藤の分水嶺に挑戦していくところが谷崎の文学の醍醐味だと思いますが、それは処女作「刺青」からいかんなく発揮されています。妖しい倒錯の世界のその向こうにある人間の底深い暗さを、耽美的な文体でえぐる谷崎の筆致には背筋を凍らせるような鋭さがあります。

マゾヒズムらの耽美的な世界に関して谷崎の評価は書きつくされているだろう。「痴人の愛」らに見られるあの巧さ。耽美的美意識は他者と相容れにくい生理・性欲だからこそ、自己満足を超えた完成度を目指すのは至難の業だ。あえてもう書かれてるだろうが、タイトル作の『刺青』について。おそらく、日本文学の中で、最高の完成度を誇る短編の一つ。女の背に踊る刺青一つで、マゾヒズムとサディズムの交錯を描いた作者の才能には脱帽するしかない。秀逸の文章で綴られるその背は静謐でありながら、極彩の彩りを立ち上がらせ、読むものの中に、欲望への魅惑と恐れを峻烈に呼び起こす。
