　話の静けさが、ひたひたと胸に満ちてくる味わい。五つの話それぞれの主人公の人生に訪れた不思議な出来事、不思議な縁が綴られていく短篇集。池に広がった波紋がすーっと消えていくみたいな文章の静謐感。心地よく浸ることができました。
　「偶然の旅人」「ハナレイ・ベイ」「どこであれそれが見つかりそうな場所で」「日々移動する腎臓のかたちをした石」「品川猿」の五篇を収録。解決されずにいる問題や悩み、わだかまりを抱えた主人公が、奇妙な出来事に遭遇することで、人生の新たな一歩を踏み出していく。
　なかでも、「日々移動する腎臓のかたちをした石」の話が面白かったな。語り手の小説家が出会う女性のキャラが魅力的だったこと、彼女の職業が予想外なものだったこと、タイトルの作中作が話に深みを添えていること。そうしたところに、マジカルな話のきらめきを感じました。
　話の後味も、余韻があってよかったですね。不思議な体験をまるごと受け入れた後、それぞれの人生に向けて、再び歩き出していく主人公たち。それまで引きずっていた重石のようなものが、ふっと消えていたような気配。清々しい心持ちになりました。

村上春樹は、
深い悲しみや不条理に立ち尽くす人間の感情を、
日常が微妙に歪んでいき先にあらわれる非日常として描く。
本作はそういう点で、
村上春樹の典型的な短編小説であると思う。
ただちょっぴり作風が変わったような気がするのだ。

５つの短編が掲載されている。
ゲイであることをカミングアウトした結果、家族と孤立して暮らす調律師、
ハワイで鮫に襲われ息子を失った中年女性、
失踪した人間を捜す男、
謎の恋人は果たして「本当に意味がある女」なのかに悩む小説家、
名前を猿に奪われた若い女性。
主人公の背景は省略されているが、
全員、欠落を抱えて生きている。

いずも結末に再生に向けての希望がある。
それが従来の村上作品に比して、
異なる点だ。
主人公達は、
家族と和解し、
息子の死後の生活を受け入れ、
消えた恋人を「本当に意味がある女」だと受け入れる。
前向きだ。
希望に向けて立ち上がろうとする力強さ、
再生の気配が本作のバックボーンにあるように思う。

　本の裏表紙に「見慣れた世界の一瞬の世界の一瞬の盲点にかき消えたものたちの不可思議な運命を辿る５つの物語」とある。まさにその通りだと、読み終えた今なら思う。でも読む前は「何のこっちゃ？」という感じ。
　読めばわかる。

　最後の「品川猿」は何となく好ましい。ストーリーもくすぐるものがあるし、色んな設定の非現実さをそういうものとして話を進めていく感じも僕をくすぐる。
