「ノルウェイの森」を読んでも、「国境の南、太陽の西」を読んでも大して面白いと思えなかったが、これだけは違った。今まで読んだ全ての本の中でも間違いなく5本の指に入るし、人に勧めたくなる作品だ。

私がどうしても村上作品を好きになれない要因である、女性との関係の描かれ方や、おしゃれすぎる飲食の情景でさえ、「世界の終わり」の幻想的な世界との対比によって、“日常”を構成する要素に見えてくる。

そして、物語の結末。

それまで、冒険活劇が繰り広げられてきた「ハードボイルドワンダーランド」の結末は、悲しくなるほど穏やかで内省的。主人公が手放さざるをえない“日常”を想ってなぜか涙が出た。
もう一方の「世界の終わり」は、眠りから目覚めたような展開で、希望へとつながっていきそうな描写で終わる。

絶対に、読み終わってもすぐには現実世界に戻れず、深い余韻にゆっくり浸りたくなる1冊だ。

作品冒頭、巨大なエレベーターでポケットのコインを数える印象的なシーン。そして、金色の一角獣、ピンクの太った娘、老博士、夢読み、影、やみくろ、歌の消失した世界……作家の豊かな想像力を見せつける数々のキーワード。２つの話が並行的に語られるが、あまり気にせず本の順序通りに読み進めると、不思議なシンクロ感が味わえる。意表をつく結末も、読む者におおきな宿題を投げつけられたようで、私自身未だ折に触れて読み返してしまう要因かもしれない。

最初、読み通せずに挫折してしまう人も、それだけ読み応えのある作品だと思って、何度かトライしてください。きっとすばらしい作品だと感じ取れるはずです。ところで。単行本も文庫本も今のポップな装幀よりオリジナルの司修氏の暗いイメージのデザインがおすすめです。

村上春樹の数ある著作の中で完成度が最も高いのは世間も私も認めるところである。それほどまでに、細部に至るまで精密に計算されつくされている。一章ごとに二つのストーリーがパラレルに展開している。二つの世界は互いに影響しあっている。この二つの物語がつむぎだす緊張感がたまらない。

村上春樹は翻訳家でもある。翻訳というのは一つの物語を頭の中に概念として記録し、それを違う形のものに作り変える仕事である。小説の主人公は頭の中にブラックボックスを持っていてそこで、なにやら作業をする。作業の内容は主人公にもわからない。これは翻訳家である村上春樹だからこそ、思いついた一つの世界認識の方法であるよう気もする。

この作品には考えるべく、問題がたくさんあると思う。しかし、そこを気にしなくても、不思議な冒険物語として気軽に読めるだろう。私は、村上春樹初心者には必ずこの本を進めることにしている。もっとも、読みやすく筆者のテイストも伝わるからだ。村上春樹の最初の一冊に思い悩んでいる人、これから読み始めたらどうですか？
