　「蛍」が「ノルウェイの森」の原作ということで　この短編集も有名になったと思う。実際「蛍」を読んだ段階では　結末の無い奇妙な短編という印象だった。村上春樹自身もこの短編が何処に行くかは分らなかったと告白している位である。その後　この短編の続きを読みたいと人に言われて書いたのが「ノルウェイの森」になり　村上春樹の大ブレークとなった。人生いろいろである。

　ところで　小生は（そして結構同意見も多いが）本短編集の白眉は「納屋を焼く」だと思う。これまた結末の無いミステリアスな作品ながら　ざらっと感じる「闇の深さ」に引き込まれる。ここで断言してしまうが　この「納屋を焼く」という言葉の意味は「人を殺す」と考えることが　一番素直な読み方だと思う。どうしようもない心の闇を抱えた登場人物が主人公の女友達を殺してしまう話だ。後の「ダンスダンスダンス」の五反田君の原型がここにある。主人公は　それを分っていながら　淡々とジョギングにいそしむ不気味な話である。

　村上春樹はこのように短編で何かを掴み　それを長編に練り直す豪腕に魅力がある。彼が｢豪腕」に見えないのは　そのソフトな語り口に惑わされるからだ。長編と　その原型の短編を読み比べていると　彼の腕の筋肉の動きが見える気がする。そんな所が　ある意味でとても誠実であるとも思う。

『蛍』は『ノルウェイの森、『納屋を焼く』は『ダンスダンスダンス』の原作（もしくは同時に書かれた？）と勝手に解釈して読んでいます。

淡々とした記述、クリスプな言葉運びの中に、時折「ぎょっ」とする闇が見えて、とてもスリリングな短編集です。

『踊る男』から長編を書いてくれないでしょうか。。。

私にとって、村上春樹デビューとなった一冊。
もともと彼の作品の愛読者であった兄の本棚から
なんとなぁく選んだものだったのですが、兄には
｢それから行ったんだ(笑)？｣
みたいに言われました。

通学中、電車にゆられながら読んでいたのですが、
不思議な空間にいるような、私の周りにだけ違和感が流れるような、
そんな感覚に陥ってしまいました。

私にとって、この作品は、｢村上春樹入門｣としては大正解だったと思っています。
なんかこう、がつん、ときてしまいました。
｢納屋を焼く｣なんて特に。

こんな｢不思議｣を、なんでもない風にさらさらと書き綴ってしまえる村上春樹さん。
私みたいな平凡な女子高生の心さえ捉えてしまうなんて。
