　春・夏・秋・冬と、季節ごとに風の名前を分類してくれている。
　
　まず驚いたのが、名前の多さだ。
「春」分類のものだけで、僕が知ってる風にまつわる言葉の語彙をはるかに上回っていた。
以下、僕の知らなかったものをいくつか紹介する。
【吹花擘柳】花をそっと吹き開かせ、また柳の芽を咲き分けるようにそっと吹く春風。
【薫風】若葉の間を吹き抜けて、初夏の香りを運ぶ南風。
【鷹風】雲を凌ぐほど、天高く勇壮に飛ぶ鷹を秋風が乗せるところからきた。
【雪颪】雪を交えて山から吹き降ろす風。


　読んでいて気づいたことは、これら「風の名前」が風だけでなく、風の吹く場所そのものを描写していることだ。「光風」は春の白い光の中をそよぐ風だし、「色なき風」は秋の物寂しい場所に吹く冷たい風だ。
　風を感じて名前つけようとした時、それは風というよりその場所・その時間を名付けることになるのかもしれない。その地方にしか存在しない風の名前も沢山出てきた。

　
　その風の持つ情景や匂い、名づけた人の心情に、思いを馳せながら読んだ。
　それぞれの名前が持つイメージにくすぐられて、ふと星野道夫さんのエッセイにあった一節を思い出した。
　「風は、地球上で最も軟らかい『化石』なのだ」　星野さんが何度も引用していた言葉だ。
　そうかもしれない。
　
　もし素敵な「風」と出会ったら、その姿や匂いを感じてみたい。
　その時今日覚えた風の名前を思い出せたら、ちょっと嬉しい。

　自分一人読んで終わるのはもったいない詩が、巻頭を飾っています。

　　　【花信風】（早春から初夏にかけて、花の季節到来を告げるように吹くやさしい風）

「わたしがここにいたことは　わたしに触れた風が　伝えてくれることでしょう」　花はつめたい空のひかりにも　松ぼっくりにも　語りかけています　「わたしを吹く風は　しばらくわたしの香りを　袖にとどめていることでしょう」　風の振袖は　みごとな落花模様です　それきり花は口をつぐみました

　全体、四季の風「春の風」「夏の風」「秋の風」「冬の風」、季知らずの風に分かれ、約３００の風の名、その紹介に満ち溢れ、吹き荒れています。そして、全編爽やかです。
　
　ことばでしか紹介でないレビュー…本当は「見えない風」のように、写真が使えないのは残念です。本書を開いて見るしかありません。
　
　特に心惹かれた風のいくつかを列挙するしかできない、わが筆力のなさを嘆きながら…
