　帯に「国際日本文化研究センター共同研究・成果論文集」とある通り、中身は論文集です。
　あとがきで小松和彦先生が述べている通り、「現在の怪異・妖怪研究にきわめて重要な意義を持つ」ものでしょう。一つ一つの論文に読み応えがあり、妖怪への愛情が溢れているように感じました。

　もちろん、論文集という形式上、一つ一つが専門的分野から取り上げていることもあり、決して敷居が低いものではないと思いますが、妖怪好きな人にはお勧めの一冊だと思われます。もちろん、真剣に妖怪を研究しようという人には、必須だと言えるのではないでしょうか。

　個人的な意見ですが、妖怪研究の一つの到達点であり、さらにここから新たな展開が開かれる、歴史的な一冊と思われます。是非、ご一読を

妖怪などというおどろおどろしい存在の研究をしておられる小松和彦が編集した論文集。多角的に妖怪への考察がなされているので今までの妖怪研究とは違った感じの論考に出会えるだろう。本書以外にも『怪異学の技法』という、怪異の歴史的な意義の論文集もあるので、併読すると、昔と比べていかに妖怪研究が進んだかが分かるだろう。民俗学や国文学、歴史学などといった壁を取り払い、それらの学問をすり合わせる事によって妖怪研究をしている国際日本文化研究センターの研究成果が本書によって明らかになる。まだまだ荒削りだが、確実に進歩している妖怪研究をご覧あれ。

妖怪ブームに対して、ちょっと違うんだよねという姿勢の著者。そのお陰でこんなに本を出版出来ているのだから、そんなに毎回苦言を呈さなくとも良いのではないかと思う。
複数人の著述が収録されており、内容は妖怪を通して描かれた当時の人間の考えや興味を読み解こうというもの。当然、著述者により読みやすい章と、読みにくい章がある。怪異の民俗学シリーズをまとめたようと意図しているらしいが、全体にまとまった概念のものではないので、読者は興味のあるところだけを読むなら、怪異の民俗学の該当巻を読んだ方が良いかもしれない。
