　カバー表に大日如来坐像が、カバー裏にそのＸ線写真が載っている。この坐像は、真如苑所蔵で、２００８年春にニューヨークのオークションにかけられ、巨額で落札されたものという。現在は東京国立博物館に寄託されているそうだ。
　そのＸ線写真の中央近く、胸部に塔のようなものが映っている。本書４４ページに水晶製五輪塔だと解説されている。その五輪塔の細部写真の中央に黒々とした小さいものが映っていて、それは「舎利」だという。誰のものかは書いてないが、この像が手の込んだ作りであることがよく分かる。
　この大日如来坐像は、著者の鑑定で運慶作とされたもの。オークションにかけられる以前、平成１６年に著者が勤務していた東博で公開されたという。その折に拝むことができた人も多いだろう。
　その鑑定者である著者は、学生の頃に運慶作の像とであって仏像研究の基点にしたという。それからほぼ３０年ほど、運慶とであい続けて研究者生活を営んできたらしい。もちろん、運慶以外の仏像にも詳しく、ことに近来、仏像をやさしく説くことで知られるようになった。
　本書は運慶の生涯とその作風、その価値を適切に解説している。運慶は「祈りをかたちにした仏師」という表現が印象的。同時に、その生涯を書いた文章から、運慶がたぐいまれなマネージャー、組織の指導者であったと分かる。よく運慶を積層的に描いていて感銘深い。

運慶仏の素晴らしさを再認識できる本として申し分ありません。
それはそれとして、なんですが、仏師は宗教家ではない。
自分の発意ではなく、依頼主からの依頼を受けて仏像を刻む。それは、単なる受注ではなかったでしょう。
依頼主の願い、祈り、つまりこころざしを受け止めて、仏像という形に表す。
しかもその作品は、礼拝の対象であり、信仰の対象となる。人々がその仏像に苦しみを訴え、救いを求める。
自らは宗教家ではない仏師が仏像を刻むということは、並大抵ではなかったでしょう。
美術品としていくら素晴しくても、拝んだ人の心が癒されなければ、仏像とは呼べないでしょうから。
2008年春に落札された大日如来像が詳しく紹介されています。
像として素晴しいのはもちろん、運慶が胎内に込めた木札、心月輪、仏舎利といった品々も素晴しいと思う。
単なる木でできた像ではなく、なんとか仏としての魂をも込めようとした心意気が伝わってくるようです。
