　例えばある日本文学専攻のアメリカ人がいるとします。その人の日本語能力は抜群で、その辺の若い日本人よりも漢字をたくさん知っているとしましょう。それでももしその人が「ウルトラマン」「サザエさん」「天声人語」「１０１回目のプロポーズ」「紅白歌合戦」「千と千尋の神隠し」「窓ぎわのトットちゃん」といった（日本人なら誰もが知っている）＜タイトル＞の意味を理解できないとしたら、私たちはその人の日本語の学習方法には何か問題があるとうたがいたくなってしまうのではないでしょうか。

　多くの人に慣れ親しまれた＜タイトル＞をもつ作品はその国の人々の日々の暮らしに大きな影響を与えているはずです。ですから＜タイトル＞を知らないということは、その国の人々の＜生活＞に関心をもたないということのあらわれともとれます。ですから英米の人々に影響を与えた＜タイトル＞をこの本で知ろうとする努力はとても貴重なことだと私は思います。

　この本はただ単にそのタイトルを持つ作品の内容と制作年が書かれているだけでなく、例えば「ローマの休日」の項には＜古代ローマ人がライオンと人間が闘う競技などを観戦して日常のうさを晴らしたのと王女のつかの間のアバンチュールをかけている。＞といった解説があり、また「幻の女」の項では＜書き出しの「夜は若く、彼も若かった」は有名。＞といった具合にちょっとした豆知識も書かれています。日がな一日拾い読みしても飽きません。

　プロの翻訳家にとっては各タイトルの日本語の定訳を見つけることが出来るので重宝なのではないでしょうか。
