発想はすごくいい本だ。これはと思って、しばらく辞書と共に普段の学習用に使ってみた。しかし、実際に普段の勉強で使い込もうとしてみると、この著者一人ではなく出版前に複数の監修者にもチェックさせてもう少し記述レベルや収録語に工夫をしてから出版した方が良かったのではないかと強く思った。すごくマイナーな単語が多くあるのに、基本的なもので欠けているものがあったり、それぞれのまんだらによっても記述の深さにばらつきを感じる。わかりやすいところからいくとgolden関連はあるけどsilverはないし、greenはあるけど、blueやredはない。さらにいくと、contrite→contritionとあるけど、この流れにcontriveは入ってこないのかな、countの流れにcontractは関係しないのかな、とかよくわからない。学習用としてはもうひと工夫ほしい。次版以降を待ちたい。

かなり深いところまで扱っているので、単語を覚えるために使うというよりは、かなりボキャブラリーのある人が理解を深め、より多くの単語を身につけていく材料とするのがいいと思います。語源から単語を覚えていきたいのであれば、「語源とイラストで覚える」や「つむぐ英単語」が適しています。

今まで、この系統の本は語源の表面だけナデタ感じで物足りなかったのですが、
この本は中々イイですよ。語源系の英単語ものなら迷わずコレですね。

ラテン語系、ゲルマン系、ギリシア系、北欧系などに分類された単語が
「まんだら図」上に数珠繋ぎに展開されています。

各単語に対する語源説明も端的で、わかり易く、
イラストや構成が手作り感にあふれていて、ほのぼのした感じも醸し出しています。

数編の語源にまつわるトピックも掲載されていて読み物としても楽しい作りになっています。

ただ、例えば、access、process　など一般的な語源単語で載っていないものもあるので(recessは載っています）、
それが心配な方は「Mini‐Max英単語倍増計画」などと併用するのが良いのではないかと思います。

でも、この「まんだら」を読めば載っていない単語も当然のように解るようになりますよ。
