ハンブルク国立歌劇場の黄金期（今でもそうかな）の７１年にスタジオ収録されたものです。そういう意味では物語に集中して観る事ができます。歌手陣もハンス・ゾーティン、ニコライ・ゲッダ、ディートリヒ・フィッシャー＝ディースカウ、クリスティーナ・ドイテコム、エディット・マルティス、クルト・モルといった顔ぶれです。
残念ながら、やはり７１年ということもあって、現在からみれば画像・録音レベルは劣っていると、言わざる得ませんが、時代のフィルターを透して、オーソドックスな舞台を観ると思えば気になりません。
対訳付のブックレットや大まかな人間関係の説明図など初めてでもわかりやすいDVD＆BOOKです。
価格も抑えてあって、手にしやすいものです。

ピーター・ユスティノフの舞台演出を元にヨアヒム・ヘス監督が映像化。ヘス監督はリーバーマン・プロで他にも『ヴォツェック』『魔弾の射手』『皇帝と船大工』『ニュルンベルクのマイスタージンガー』なども映像化している。特に『ヴォツェック』は傑作。この『魔笛』も映像が大変に面白い。例えば最初の侍女達の３重唱からカメラ・ワークが大胆な動きで迫力のある映像を作り出す。アップになる箇所も多い。装置や衣裳、演出はオーソドックスで手堅い。
　映画として製作されているため、舞台では難しい、地下で酒やご馳走が突然出現する箇所も不自然なく表現されているし、火と水の試練は特殊映像で処理されている。映像として選ぶときに、遜色の無い１枚であった。
