　1976年に角川文庫として出たものの復刊。
　Sterling Northの『Rascal』（1963年）の翻訳。　アニメ化され、有名になった『あらいぐまラスカル』の原作。ちなみにラスカルとは「やんちゃぼうず」ほどの意味。
　少年時代にアライグマを育てた経験を振り返って書いた物語。ほぼ実話らしい。シカゴから少し離れた田舎が舞台で、森と動物の豊富な素晴らしい世界のようだ。そこで少年は色々な動物をペットにしていく。なかでもラスカルは素敵なやつだったらしい。良く懐き、賢く、悪戯好き。騒ぎも巻き起こすが、少年との信頼関係も築き上げられている。郷愁を誘う物語であった。
　第一次大戦で兄が出征していたり、自動車とウマのレースがあったり、背景となる部分も面白い。　
　『ラスカル』には、いくつかの翻訳があるようだが、本書は完訳版。原文に忠実な訳となっている。訳者の亀山龍樹は児童文学や冒険ものを数多く手掛けた人物。しかし、それにしては訳が拙い。日本語として整理されていないし、正確さに疑問の残る部分も。
