　「沿線文化人類学」、「沿線民俗学」という分野を確立（？）した著者の本。
　近年増えてきた中央線本の火付け役となった本の一つである。ただ、同著者の「中央線の呪い」を読んだことのある人には重複した内容が多い。
　肩ひじ張らずに読め、いろいろな知識が身につくので、時間つぶしに読む本としては最適なタイプの本である。

　あまり真に受けたり、本気で反論するような人には薦められないが、特に中央線沿線に住んでいる人にとっては一読の価値があると思う。

沿線に親戚が住んでいたことや結婚後一時自分自身も住んでいたことがあり、中央線には親しみを感じていた。70年代で時間が止まってしまったかのような文化がある一方、新宿や四谷、東京という主要駅に停車するビジネスマンが利用する路線でもある。そんな中央線を文化人類学的に斬るのが本書だ。ただし、硬い学究的なものではない。読んでいて「ぷぷっ」と笑ってしまうような、「そうそう、あるある」とうなづいてしまうような軽いノリの本だ。

正直、読後に何か残るものがあるわけではないが、中央線文化を愛してやまない人や沿線に在住、通勤、通学している人などは話のネタにはなるだろう。いや、もしかしたら人身事故で止まった中央線の中で時間つぶしに読むというのが最も正しい本書の読み方かもしれない。

外国に住んでいると、日本のローカルな情報が恋しくなる。そんな気持ちでこの本に手を出したのは正に正解だった。正直言って中央線は垢抜けないところと思っていたけど、その垢抜けない良さが分かってくる。今では帰国したときに、本に書いてある場所に行くのを楽しみにしている。僕は東京出身ではないけれど、関東に在住していたことがあるし、両親や親戚が中央線沿いに住んでいたりするので、今では中央線にとても親近感を感じるようになった。ちなみに、サンフランシスコにある某日系大手書店でも、最近（２００４年２月）この本は数冊平積みにして置いてある。
