　1996年にダイヤモンド社から出た『東南アジア丸かじり！』の文庫化。
　シンガポール、マレーシア、タイ、ベトナム、カンボジア、ラオス、インドネシア、フィリピン、ビルマの９カ国を取り上げ、各国の料理を紹介した本。
　著者は新聞記者として東南アジア各国を訪れた経験を持つ。なかでもシンガポールには何年間か住んでいたようで、本書でもシンガポールを扱った章が抜群に面白い。町の実態、政治・風土・人々をつぶさに観察して、そこから食文化を語っている。シンガポールという国がいかに特殊であるか。本来は風土・文化的に同一であるはずのマレーシアと読み比べてみると興味深い。
　シンガポール意外の章は、いくぶんか質が落ちる。文章はこなれているし、料理の美味しさを伝えるのにも長けている。しかし、単なる紹介に終わってしまっており残念だった。
