小学館ライブラリー｢川へふたたび｣の大増補版。釧路川、長良川、四万十川、吉野川、球磨川に関するこれまで発表したエッセイを集めてある。川ごとに今尾恵介の地図が付く。川の流れてと行き場を失った金の流れが同時に描かれている。｢善良というのは無知と同義語で、嫌いだ｣と書いているように川を知らない官僚の無知、川を知らない住民の無知を激しく指摘している。読むのが辛くなるほどの破壊のすさまじさだが、川が一つや二つ消えても痛くもかゆくもない人々の方が多数派なのだろうなあ、この国は。
